Well, it's one that has been rumoured for a while (not as much as some games, we'll admit), but Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, a new entry in the slice-of-life Mii series has been announced for the Switch's 2026 lineup.
It looks... well, like a Tomodachi Life game. We saw a group of little Miis going about their daily lives, dancing, dreaming, chilling out and... passing wind? Yep, sounds about right. The trailer was also home to a particularly haunting giant Mii. Make of that what you will.

You'll find the official rundown from Nintendo and a handful of screenshots below:
The Tomodachi Life series is back with its first brand new entry in over ten years. Create your own Mii characters based on yourself, friends, family – anyone! – and watch them live their lives on an island out at sea. Get involved with their relationships and experience all the weird and wonderful ways these Mii characters interact. You may even drop in on their dreams!
There's no precise release date for this one just yet, though Nintendo assured us that we'll be 'Living the Dream' at some point next year. Hey, it's been a 10-year wait since the last entry in the series, so a few more months won't hurt.
Are you excited to see the return of Tomodachi Life? Drop into our dreams below.

This is one of the three interesting reveals for me. I'll probably end up buying it.
You had me at Tomodachi Life.
EDIT: The Japanese Nintendo Direct website confirmed a physical version for this and Rhythm Heaven.
Can't belive we actually finally get a new Tomodachi Life. 9 years after release of the Switch nonetheless
the voice acting is terrifying, but it looks like it has potential, sad for those hoping it would be this year 😕
@OctolingKing13 "the voice acting is terrifying" that's part of the charm of the game
Surely the most underwhelming 'one last thing' in Direct history. Some will have been happy with the news but come on now.
This is honestly pretty awesome! Though did they really had to make me feel old when they said that the previous tomodachi life game came out 10 years ago?
ALL HAIL THE VIRTUAL BOY
Miis are alive, and I couldn't be happier! Here's hoping they carry over the sheer insanity that was the Miitopia customization system.
The Miis are alive. Pretty wild. Here's hoping Switch 2's Mii Maker isn't so soulless.
Seeing this making a comeback was definitely a shocker. I remember for years everyone wanted a Tomodachi Life sequel and I thought it wasn’t ever going to happen, but it did! The 3DS game is so weird and random but extremely fun and entertaining, and this reveal absolutely captured the quirkiness of it. Can’t wait to see what they’ll do for this one.
Awesome. Now everyone gets the excuse to preted this disaster of a direct was good.
My friend is gonna be very happy about this.
Although.... 2026? When does Nintendo announce something this early (not counting TOTK l)? Guess Nintendo REALLY had to get this out there real quick
Tomodachi Life is such a quirky game so I love that we're finally getting a sequel!
This doesn't have the same charm as the previous game, from what I've seen. People will try to defend it since it's the only entry we've got in so long, but I genuinely don't think this will be the same type of experience.
I don't think I liked Tomodachi Life enough to buy another one, but I'm happy for the people who have been begging for this.
LGBTQ+ RELATIONSHIPS HERE WE COME BABY

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/video-games/nintendo-apologizes-omitting-gay-marriage-tomodachi-life-n101861
Between this and Rhythm Heaven, we are truly back in the DS/3DS era of weird-as-hell releases and I couldn't be happier XD
Loved the first one, it was just amazing dumb fun with the miis, I can’t wait.
Took em long enough. They better not fumble this game!!!!!!
@Novamii I think they will, some of the haircuts I saw were not natural to the Miis. Then again, I don't know if Tomodachi Life or even Tomodachi Collection (the unlocalized DS game) had haircut customization.
Can’t believe it’s real! Art style looks great and looms like its going to be another gem of a game. 2026 is a bit sad to hear but I suppose knowing it exists is great.
@HammerGalladeBro if I remember, the game didn’t really have any hairstyle customization besides the hair dye spray you could use to change the Mii’s hair color.
@PikminMarioKirby
You saw a 1 minute clip of what is essentially the same game with updated graphics. No way you can really make that conclusion so soon me boy.
Somebody was on here earlier saying this was the last gasp for a sequel. But then..... this. Prescient perhaps. I enjoyed the original but largely for creating awkward situations.
This was my favorite announcement by far. I love the first game so much and I never expected a sequel! Shame that it's still a year away though
YEAH BABY! I summoned this into existence last night! Am I a wizard, or what?
Let's go!!!!
@Hero-of-WiiU It's not the same; they're outside.
The amount of people asking for this is insane. Glad to see it though.
@LadyCharlie "This enormous woman will devour us all!"
Tomodachi Life on Switch and a new one at that? Of course I'm on board (pun intended) - absolutely loved Tomodachi Life on 3DS and I'm so looking forward to playing this one next year!
Barely into 2025 and we’re already getting a 2026 lineup.
I played the original so much on my 3ds, and I loved it so much. I'll definitely be picking this one up, glad we finally got a sequel!
Can't wait for Grummzy to soil himself in rage over the 'non-binary' and 'choose your partner preference' options 😏
Might give this one a miss though. I liked it on the 3DS but I felt the novelty wore off a little after a while
So I was wrong about Kirby and Kid Icarus, but right about Tomodachi Life. Now THAT is left field!
Baffled about this being next year but still happy, especially since it’s a new game. I will always prefer Miis over those Sportsmate guys from Switch Sports.
@Pastellioli Thanks for that info. Hopefully one day I can get my hands on a Tomodachi Life 3DS copy.
Awesome news! Day 1 for me.
Also star of the direct for me. Very deserving of the “1 last game “ imo.
@PikminMarioKirby It's literally a teaser with less than 2 minutes of footage from a game that is still in development and not coming out until next year. I don't care about the game itself, but come on.
@HammerGalladeBro The game is really fun! Hopefully you can get a copy, I think you’d like playing it
Giantess Hentai Life.
Happy for the Tomodachi Life fans. They've been begging for a new game for awhile.
I dont think this is for me at all but I do look forward to seeing clips from other people's gameplay.
Do they have those text-to-speech voices because there is some kind of emergent dialogue system? Or is it just a stylistic choice?
Another comment on the voices: with a few years of Tiktok under our collective belts, this actually now sounds completely normal.
The Switch isn’t going down with a whimper!
Anyone who expected first-party heavy hitters when the Switch 2 direct is less than a week away was kinda asking for disappointment (especially if Nintendo games are the only games they play)
Most of the games weren’t for me but it was still a good Direct! Shadow Labyrinth, Prime 4, Rift of the Necrodancer, Rhythm Heaven Groove, and the new Tomodachi Life look great! (and let’s hope they keep their promise of letting the Miis have gay relationships with other Miis like they kinda did with Miitopia)
Yeeeeesir I was gonna try to get this for 3ds but now I’ll just wait for this
@Dev-N The Mii’s have been part of my childhood since getting my first 2DS back in 2015.
I still remember playing the demo on my New 2DS XL. Shouldn’t have deleted the demo data in case I wanted the full game 😭💔
Either way, happy to see Nintendo is bringing back Mii’s.
@octokid ALL HAIL THE WII U in tbis game, watch this space
i will say that i'm kind of glad the game is in one map this time around instead of being split into sections
@Fizza I think this alone is why they're waiting to release it until 2026.
AHH Cant wait! The hairstyles seems to be from Miitopia and im so exicted for this
Got this and Rhythm Heaven on my wishlists for next year
The Switch is not going down without a fight.
@OorWullie hard disagree. Tomadachi life is fantastic. i literally jumped up and screamed while watching with my brother and sister. there have surely been worse direct conclusions. especially during the wii U.
This is an outstanding final year.
This will definitely be a day one for me. I'll probably get it for my kid too!
Is this anything like Animal Crossing? I've tried Animal Crossing three times and it seems those games just aren't for me. I just don't want to get burned again as I assume this will be $60 bucks. I do like that this game exists even if it might not be for me.
Hope they add over customization from this and miitopia to the default mii maker in switch 2. We've needed more options and customization wince the Wii wiiu 3ds and switch for the mii maker
First I was interested, because I thought this was something new for Animal Crossing, but as soon as the first thing happened, all I got was creepy vibes. It is not for me.
YAAAAAY...!!! 😃😃😃
TOMODACHI LIFE 2 ON NINTENDO SWITCH!
I thought it was a new Animal Crossing until I saw Mii characters, I knew it was Tomodachi Life game.
I will going crazy again (part 2.0) with this Tomodachi Life.
Btw, I wonder if this time Nintendo will allow the same gender marriage.
OMG!!! A new tomodachi life! I'm so dang excited! I've never been this excited for a game before! Day one!(hopefully)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv0_kkzhIT0
@anzzjam : I wouldn't say it's anything even remotely like Animal Crossing (which has more in common with the plethora of farm sims in circulation).
In Tomodachi Life, you make your characters, and they're essentially left to their own devices. You can feed them and influence some of their decision-making, but much of the fun is in the randomised interactions that they have with the other characters and peculiar situations that they find themselves in. The more the merrier.
Miis can also marry and have kids (and even divorce, which is presumably why it copped a PG rating, citing "Mild themes", in Australia ). Incidentally, I'm pretty sure some of my kids in the 3DS game are now 10+ years old... which, as a single bloke, is a little depressing.
@SillyG best comment ever lol
@N64-ROX
From my experience, Tomodachi Life 3DS version using text based voice with English accent, kinda like Vocaloid.
If you type any English words, your Mii will pronounce them exactly with English accent.
But if you typed with foreign words (non English), your Mii will say those words with English pronounce so it will sounds awkward and different.
But, after I learned the English pronounce, with some specific words I must typed, I can make my Mii on Tomodachi Life 3DS can sing Indonesian lyrics song even the game is not programmed to say the words in Indonesian pronounce.
The secret is the words you must typed that mimicking the pronounce of the other language words but the spelling is using English pronounce.
Honestly cannot wait! I played the 3ds game for hours as a kid! Hopefully it is more replayable tho
Add more hairstyles, Nintendo...!
A detail that made me happy: The same logo (or style of logo) is used internationally! Down with the Americanised logo!
Literally the ONLY exciting new announcement. But it’s REALLY EXCITING
@Anti-Matter that's gold that you were able to get them to sing in Indonesian!
I think a lot of people don't get just how big, for as weird and niche it is, Tomodachi Life was. It's sold over 6 million copies! That's... a couple Metroids Dread worth. 😬
Which makes me feel a little bad for Metroid more than anything. But I can definitely see why Nintendo considers this a big announcement. It was!
I kid you not. As the Direct was going on, I was kind of hoping for an announcement for a Tomodachi Life Switch announcement. My daughter had Tomodachi Life on my 3DS. About a week ago, my 3DS went kaput and she was upset because she wouldn't no longer be able to play it. So I'm sure she'll be excited to hear the game is coming to the Switch.
@SillyG Thanks for the thorough and helpful reply. Hmm that could be fun. I hope there is a demo for it.
İ have never played this game from start to the end. A Tomodachi Life game. İ have played a little Tomodachi Life game. İt was very fun to play. İt was on the Nintendo 3DS. İt looks beautiful maybe there is a chance that İ can play this new Tomodachi Life game.
Now miis can fight in public & pass wind on the sandy beaches, I wonder if they'll censor the creative misspelling of bad words this time, it did kill me hearing their robot voices curse like wounded sailors while singing to the point I had to hit the bell to stop from cry laughing so hard.
You think they may fix the large marriage age gaps because a 26 year old mii married a 90-something year old mii on my game.
@N64-ROX A little of both.
It really adds to the quirky vibe of the games, and there are numerous situations where the characters will say/sing each others' names, or catchphrases, or really anything your heart desires (as long as you don't try using words that are blacklisted).
When you create a character, there are different sliders you can change to alter their voices, some of them are really hilarious.
@AmyTheBrawler My residents are definitely tangling up the family trees...I stopped sending children off, and now I'm pretty sure I've got some married cousins and things like that.
Whoops.
Tomodachi Life was one of the quirkiest and most fun 3DS experiences of its era. I wonder what this game will be about, maybe more interactivity?
Also, anybody noticed how sharp the shadows and image quality look? Maybe too much for it to run on Switch 1, but well, the same can be said for this 2022 Pikmin 4 teaser:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iApd7_8gN-I
I thought the Direct sucked up until that point but Tomodachi Life made it an instant 10/10. That was my favourite game on the 3DS, which is saying a lot because I had a disgusting amount of hours in New Leaf (which is still my favourite Animal Crossing). It's such a quirky experience you can't get anywhere else. It's like the Sims, but if they had autonomy.
Fantastic final announcement. I've been longing for a new Tomodachi Life!
Also happy to note what sounds like a separate UK localisation again in the Nintendo UK version of the video!
Yet another game you gotta buy physically just in case... I'm trying to secure another copy right now and my wallet is screaming at the thought.
@Chlocean how so? The potential for theft is one of the drawbacks of physical over digital. If someone steals your Switch then you can just redownload all of your digital games when you get a new one. But any physical game card which was in there is gone forever.
@N64-ROX My two statements were kinda disconnected and confusingly worded. Edited for clarity. My point was that Tomodachi Life 1 is rare/expensive. As a collector I'd prefer to buy physical because I like seeing my favorite games on my shelf (Also I'm about to lose all my 3DS eshop games because of a motherboard malfunction)
Thankfully I no longer lug my game carts around in a big case that's easily stolen, so I'm not too worried about theft.
@Chlocean ah that makes sense. I'm pretty similar in that sense. Digital is great for easy pick up and play convenience, and I have heaps of them, but any games which are important to me I try to get physical.
@Asaki in my case, the children have overruned the port to the point I can’t send them off & I still carry my original model 3DS XL with me, no greens. Even had a case where a brother & sister OC miis married each other & I was like "nope, not happening." I had to give the male mii "facial & hair surgery" to stop that moment. Maybe we'll see different relationship things with miis that aren't the "look-alike" mii in this new game.
Oh boy, I adored Tomodatchi Life of 3DS. Having a hotel full of celebrities, fictional characters and family members was a lot of fun! I love the creepy synthesised voices of the miis too! I'm hoping they're also hinting that you can be gay in the new game, it' 2025 time to drop the prejudice
@AmyTheBrawler Yeah, I lost interest in sending them off pretty quick. Some of them got to enjoy our local Japanese expo and they are now long gone, but a bunch of others got trapped between me and my then-GF, so whenever she actually charged her 3DS I'd get another huge shipment.
So now they all stay, and I'm sure if I still played I'd have some great, great, great grandchildren by now.
And yeah, Street Passes are quite rare these days. I should really look into getting Pretendo set up.
