It seems an almost impossible notion to consider, but with the Nintendo Switch celebrating its eighth birthday today, it's now merely two years away from being a decade old. A decade. That's simply absurd.
It would be oh-so easy to remark on how the console is an ageing relic at this point that's in dire need of an upgrade, but heck, we know said upgrade is coming later this year in the form of the Nintendo Switch 2. So instead, we'd like to briefly focus on how utterly incredible Nintendo's humble hybrid system really is.

The numbers speak for themselves. The Switch has, at the time of writing, sold over 150 million units since its release on 3rd March 2017. That makes it Nintendo's best-selling home console of all time and the third best-selling platform full stop, sitting just behind the Nintendo DS and Sony's PlayStation 2; a console so mysterious, it gained a further 5 million sales over a decade after is discontinuation. Bizarre.
We're not here to be bitter, however. Though we're confident the Switch will eventually surpass the Nintendo DS – even after its successor launches – that PS2 figure is a little bit out of reach for our liking. But that's okay. Nintendo won't be fussed about the Switch becoming the best-selling console of all time, regardless of such an achievement might look on CVs. It's all about the money, baby.
Casting aside the sales figures for a moment, however, the Switch is home to one of the most incredible libraries of first and third-party games (and, admittedly, a heap of absolute trash). Yes, we can talk about the likes of Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Metroid Dread until the cows come home, but we've also seen a number of remarkable revivals in the form of Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, New Pokémon Snap, and... F-Zero 99? Look, it's the best we're going to get for the time being, just take it.
Looking at third-party, you've got what arguably might be the best entry in Capcom's flagship franchise with Monster Hunter Rise, nearly the entire slate of mainline Final Fantasy games, three Persona titles, one of the best compilations of all time with Atari 50, seemingly impossible ports of titles like The Witcher III, DOOM Eternal, and Civilization VII, and so, so many more.
It really is impossible to comprehend just how extensive the Switch library really is. It completely mitigates the obvious lack of power the console has undoubtedly struggled with over the years, with the hybrid nature of the device actually making it many gamers' go-to machine. And the best part? It'll all (well, mostly all) be playable on the Switch 2 via backwards compatibility when the successor launches later this year.
In just a few months time, the Switch will have doubled the lifespan of Nintendo's beloved, misunderstood Wii U. To say that the console successfully turned the Big N's fortunes around would be a gross understatement, and with the company's aggressive focus on expanding its reach with movies and theme parks, we'd say that Nintendo's best years is still ahead of it.
We can't wait to see what the next eight years bring.

Thx, I didn't feel old enough already today
Happy birthday, non sentient object! Thank you for all of your years of service!
I bought my Switch in the midst of the pandemic and it was the best purchase i could make.
I absolutely love the Switch. It has become my favorite console of all time. It kind of ruined traditional console gaming for me. With Switch 2 I honestly wonder if my PS5 will even be useful to me.
great article that shows how the switch is just such an astounding console. its huge catalog and gimmicks are truly impressive, the switch will be forever remembered as one of the greats! and im thankful to it for being there whenever, and to bringing people together, to unite. here’s to a great eight years with the switch 2, that hopefully begins soon! champagne 🥂😻 imaginary clinks of course!
I bought my Switch Lite 12th of march 2020 (the day before the covid lock down in Denmark). I actually got it 20 € off which is kind of weird to think of now. But I guess covid helped Switch sales a lot.
8 years..... Makes me feel really really old...
These past 8 years have been some of my best, and some of my worst. There were points I wasn't sure where my life would take me, yet through it all, I had my Switch to provide me a sense of peace and happiness. (At a time when my depression was only getting worse.) Genuinely, this little console has brought so much joy to me when I needed it most, not to mention it got me more involved with the Nintendo community. This generation has become so special to me, and has become a core memory. If it weren't for the Switch, I wouldn't have been introduced to so many amazing people, so many incredible games, it really helped shape my taste in games as I know it. Lastly, if it weren't for the Switch, I wouldn't have been introduced to Etika and the JoyConBoyz community, who helped me pull through one of the darkest times of my life and helped me embrace the side of me I was afraid to show. All stemming from this teensy little console. Thanks for all the memories Switch 1, here's to many, many more with the Switch 2. I look forward to sharing them with you all. <3
I had been out of console gaming since original Xbox. I bought the Switch for my son‘s birthday July 2019 with no prior research. Then I found out they were about to release an updated version and since it was still within the return window I took it back and got the V2. I had fun playing with him, and eventually got the Zelda OLED myself, and also got him the white OLED. So now we have three in the house, one on each TV.
Ah, early 2017. Back when I was too busy with Minecraft and Lego Dimensions to care about Nintendo. Nowadays, that couldn't be further from the truth, but it makes me look back on years gone by and realize how good I had it back then.
One of my favorite days, I remember like it was yesterday. Waiting by the front door for target delivery to arrive. I was 29yrs old, I felt like I was 9.
10/10 from me. It’s my favorite system to play platformers and JRPG’s on. First Nintendo console I had since the GameCube and I’ve absolutely loved it. Been a great 5 years with the system and eagerly anticipating the Switch 2. Happy 8 years Switch!
What a day. What a generation. What a guy.

I got a couple of pre-orders in just in case there was an allocation issue prior to launch day, with the idea of cancelling one when I get the first dispatch notice. Well, they both got dispatched within five minutes of each other, so I ended up with two of them on March 3rd. 😅
This made me realise this is the first Nintendo "handheld" I didn't replace or upgrade.
GB-Pocket-Color
GBA-GBA SP
DS-DSLite
Well done my day 1 Switch, you have served me well... No idea what's going to come of you, I fear trapped in the Labo fishing game that my daughter loves (and is upset doesn't "work" with the lite)
3DS-N3DS

@abe_hikura You should have. The OLED was an incredible upgrade.
Such a fantastic platform, easy 10/10 for me.
I went to the midnight launch at my local GameStop (since shuttered) just to get my pro controller and BOTW - I had to wait a few days till my Switch console delivered from Target.
No single game console has given me this much joy since the NES.
Happy 8th Birthday, Nintendo Swith!! (as my daughter used to call it). 😄
Was day one for me then upgraded to the OLED Switch model.
Switch 2 best be worth the wait and more so Nintendos own big AAA release day games.
I have my fingers crossed as not as convinced as I used to be with the big N.
I don’t want any 4K remasters just new AAA please Nintendo from you.
Been there since day 1, bought 253 physical games and a good 70 digital games, it’s my most played console alongside my ps5.
I’ll be there day 1 for Switch 2 again, it was my best purchase and the OLED made it even better.
The garbage online play kept my ranking at a 9 instead of the 10 I'd like to give.
My time with Switch has been excellent, love being able to play what used to be TV console games in handheld and whenever I feel like it (usually just for the games I play to exercise and when I meet with my friends) also on TV and doing so quickly unlike on previous Nintendo systems, but what arguably matters even more is its extensive library of great Nintendo, third-party and indie games - there are some aspects that could be better like more power to let more intensive games run better, optional customization and so on... and that's exactly why I'm so excited for Switch 2 as much as I'm enjoying my current Switch - the power for sure will be improved by it and potentially also other aspects while keeping and expanding on the current library so it could be outstanding!
It's been one hell of a generation. 2017-2023 had so many bangers, and even as the Switch is winding down, it's doing so gracefully. Third party support has also been great on Switch, probably the best on Nintendo since SNES.
Playing a triple A game like botw outside of my home was revolutionary. Before that I was relegated to emulators on my phone. A defining moment in gaming history considering all the copycats to come out since, I feel.
I'm gonna be completely honest and say 8/10, only because some pet peeves of mine and the fact Metroid Prime 4: Beyond hasn't been released yet (that's the game that made me buy a Switch), though its coming soon.
I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the Switch. I got mine on the night of December 29th, 2019 (might as well have waited until 2020 to fire it up for the first time), a few months before the pandemic hit my area, which I survived until April 2021 with Luigi's Mansion 3, Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tetris 99 physical, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Cuphead, the NSO games and a few Arcade Archives.
The games that I normally would love to play such as Mario Odyssey and Smash Bros. Ultimate didn't do much to hype me, and to this day I still don't "feel it" (for a lack of better word) when I play them, compared to for example Super Mario 3D World or Smash Bros. for Wii U. It wasn't until I played Metroid Dread and Kirby and the Forgotten Land in 2022 that made me glad I got a Switch.
Looking back, I think I bought a Switch out of peer presure and not because I actually wanted one.
Regardless, it has its place in my collection and plan to upgrade to an OLED, hopefully by the time Metroid Prime 4: Beyond comes out. Switch 2 be damned.
We've definitely been happy with our Switch.
Lots and lots of co-op games for the family.
Lots of platformers for me to play.
I'm hoping that Switch 2 is also successful and that makes the Big N have to keep the Switch games / eshop and on-line active for a long while. LOL.
ie. Hoping this is only the halfway point for the Switch lifetime.
The Nintendo Switch was the only system I got on launch day, and with my personal time and money budgets, there may never be another console that warrants such a rush. I lost my mind seeing the announcement for it on the Wii U eshop, so I was excited to be in that (admittedly short) line outside my local to Target to pick up the Nintendo Switch. Of course, I had to wait until after school to play it , but it was still worth it. 2017 was my favorite Switch year by far, with Sonic Mania's eshop release starting my obsession with the blue blur. All that to say, happy birthday, Nintendo Switch!
Happy birthday Nintendo Switch!

It's been (still is) a fantastic run. Possible that I haven't played as many games on any other system as I have on the Switch, and I'm OLD. My first system was the NES.
The Switch is just an overall winner in terms of design. To this day I enjoy turning it on - it's responsive, wakes up the TV by itself, getting in and out of games is instanteneous, the menu is clean and uncluttered, and the machine is compact and quiet. Love the Joycon, and switching from dock to handheld (which I rarely do) just works. The whole thing was a bold design choice and they pulled it off.
I know I say it every year, but what bears parroting at all if not something only entrenched deeper in its topicality? Switch had me sold from the very first trailer and the subsequent fateful day of finally catching up in early April 2017 (the 6th IIRC) started the arguably most incredible journey I've ever experienced on one video game machine - which, among the NES/SMD nostalgia, emulation-powered SNES/GBA discoveries and the following decade's handheld wild ride, is no trivial chart to top. All the games and series I could belatedly experience, fondly revisit, excitedly discover or eagerly continue might take until NS2 release to list here, and this year only keeps adding headturners to the release calendar. My passion for this console is only matched by my wallet's estimated hatred for it.😆
The hybrid queen really represents the latest big revolution in video game experiences - not one of interactions like Wii and NDS before it but one of hobby quality. The joys of portability have been known for decades but it was Switch that, par for the course with many other things Nintendo didn't even invent but addictively mainstreamed, more or less codified the notion of a video game machine that aspires to match the user's current and future lifestyle rather than require accommodation into one. That's why the titular "switching" has remained magical from the very first moments we all saw a certain elf and his cel-shaded world quietly and elegantly leap from one screen to another, courtesy of nothing that dog owner hadn't found in the box - no separate peripherals, no cross-buys and cross-save clouds to ping-pong the playthrough between, just "anytime, anywhere, with anyone". It would have only felt any better if Satoru Iwata was still around to experience all these eight years with us... but for all we know, he might well be smiling at the view from above. Including all the smiles his legacy and vision, carried on by the others at the company, has brought to our own faces time and time again.
This is definitely not the last anniversary Switch will be celebrating on store shelves, but even long past its eventual commercial retirement, it will undoubtedly remain one of THE gaming machines people and fiction works will associate with the very pastime for years to come. The legends of the generations past can attest to that, and Switch has earned its place among them ten times over.🍻
It's been a long 8 years, that's for sure, at least 2 years too long for me.
I voted 7 good in part b/c I already played several big Switch games on Wii U - Zelda BotW, MK8, Pikmin 3, the upcoming XCX - and it's been nearly 8 years since the last 3D Mario game, and that's too long. 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2, 3D World had a nice pace going.
I'm also not a handheld gamer, so I didn't get the benefit of a really nice handheld you all got upgrading from 3DS.
So a 7 is where I'm at, for 8 years that might have benefited from being only 7. It's been a decade since I've played a new console Mario Kart, that's like 5 years too long. 😩
A 7 is "good" by the way, before you all start gunning for me saying I said it was "bad". I didn't make the poll.😄
I think the switch is my favourite console I've ever owned, it's either that or the ps3 anyways.
Truth be told I don't think it's in dire need of a replacement, but clearly the end is nigh, it's earned it rest (unless ringfit adventure isn't backwards compatible in which case it'll keep on going)
It's also my birthday.
Every year in my birthday I get a little more "bridge jumpy" depressive.
So that's why I voted 1, because the Switch's birthday is the worst day of the year
I was able to pre-order two Switch for day one release on GameStop website. I had to use a different credit card to get the second system as well as it was bundled with 1,2 Switch. I kept the gray joy-con one for myself and gave the blue-red joy-con Switch ( along with the 1,2 Switch game ) to a friend I had purchased the system for. I also purchased the BotW Master Edition which I still have unopened in-box. The Switch was the first Nintendo system I bought on day one - and I go all the way back to the NES. I will not likely get a Switch 2 on day - unless the Zelda games get a major upgrade for it. Happy Birthday, Switch !!!
Normally I’d say it feels like yesterday but life has changed so much it feels like an eternity ago. I’ve used mine at least weekly since launch day.

@Slobbert Probably is but considering how much less my money stretches year on year the "better screen and larger battery(compared to day1)" just wasn't enough to justify it vs using those funds elsewhere.
hard to believe its been 8 years!
I can't believe the Switch has been around for almost twice as long as the Wii U was. While the Switch hasn't quite overtaken the Wii and DS in my affections, the years have flown by and the sheer breadth of its library is almost unimpeachable. I'm always going back to previous consoles (or at least their games, through backwards compatibility) even after their successors have been released, so here's to another 8 years of the Switch!
Switch 1 is absolutely the best console ever made. Even though it never got LoZ TWW.
A solid 7/10. And if you would have told me 5 years ago, that I wouldn't have gone for a 9 or 10, I would have laughed at you.
The first half was amazing, from release in 2017 (Breath of the Wild) up to the pandemic in 2020 (Animal Crossing: New Horizons). But the second half for me was a bit disappointing, and there were plenty of things over the years that I didn't enjoy.
Even though the second half was a bit more sobering and declining over the last couple of years, the first half was absolutely amazing.
Being a hybrid console, it never felt like a dedicated home console nor a real handheld.
So I kind of miss the 3DS/Wii U era and hoped for Nintendo to start being a bit more quirky, experimental, and creative again. It feel like we are going into the opposite direction though and Nintendo plays it more safe.
But with this it definitely is losing a bit of the excitement and charm.
Just my 2 cents, and if you had a different experience, I respect that, of course.

Got my Switch in 2017 and it still plays like a launch day console. The library, memories, and time spent easily makes this my favorite Nintendo console of all time.
10/10 for me. I'm as a father, so the only time I play is on my lunch break at work, so handhelds are so important.
It has its flaws but I'm not here to criticize the thing on its anniversary, the good far outweighs the bad.
I was in my late 20s when the Switch came out and now I'm in my mid 30s. It saw me through the establishment of my career. I'm making enough money now to comfortably afford the Switch 2 and so I wonder what life milestones it'll get me through. This is when things kinda slow down and get monotonous, right? It'll be the ultimate boredom killer!
Looking at the list of games available on Switch, it has maybe the best library of any console, but unfortunately I've just never liked it very much. It arrived right at the point in my life where I no longer had much use for portable gaming, and most of my favorite Nintendo series seem to have shifted their target audience away from me during this generation. Really, I've spent most of these 8 years waiting for something to bring back the excitement I've been missing, and while there have been a few good efforts, nothing has quite reached the heights of previous generations for me. Here's hoping the Switch 2 is different, though given that it is a direct iteration, I'm not too optimistic.
This is probably the best console of all time, in my opinion. Amazing library, both portable and a home console, and an incredibly fun hype cycle for the entire generation
I have just this second beaten the final boss on Hyper Light Drifter, which looked beautiful on the OLED. So many great games and memories, happy birthday little Switch.
I appreciate my Switch very much, having been one of 5 lucky people who were in line early enough on launch day at Best Buy to get one. My best time with the console have been Zelda BotW and TotK, and Xenoblade Chronicles 1-3, with Xenoblade X coming soon and likely my final game to played on the ol’ girl before I press the power button off for the last time.
Aside from those games, I really didn’t use the Switch in comparison to PS4 and PS5. Since I am a 95% docked mode guy, if a game is multi platform I always choose the more powerful system.
I will be getting Switch 2 as soon as I can, and I am guessing that the majority of my time with it will be console-exclusives, and hopefully better performing versions of the games I mentioned above.
The library and form factor (plus the pro controller) do it for me. Sometimes I'm annoyed by the experience, or lack of previous features (Virtual Console, Street Pass, Themes, the Wii U menu to view games) but overall it's one of the best things Nintendo has put out. They really hit a home run, and then kept the success going for 8 years.
Begrudgingly my second favorite Nintendo console, because I really love the Wii U still but the Switch really is the potential of the Wii U almost fully realized (still long for the double screen of the Gamepad). I never adopt at launch though, so eight years ago I took the day off and spent the full 7 hours while my kid was at preschool playing Breath of the Wild. It was almost perfectly timed for me to paraglide off the Great Plateau right as I needed to wrap up for the day. One of the best gaming days I've ever had by far.
10/10 for me, have had mine since May 2018 I believe. Mine is still running perfectly, no problems bar a few pairs of joycons repaired by Nintendo for free. A game changer for me, loved by my son and I. My daughter even got one too but didn’t play much beyond Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Switch 2, show us what you’ve got, we’re ready.
Despacito and Shape Of You were the big hits when the Switch was released and The Chainsmokers still had a career.
That's how long ago it was.
I could have sworn the GameCube just came out not that long ago...
I know we can't see who voted what, but to whomever voted "Abysmal" I say get outta here. Happy tenth, Nintendo Switch!
It should be outstanding for me since I've bought multiple Switches! The ability to play my home console games fully away from the TV unlike Wii U was absolutely liberating. I never want to be chained to a TV again. The games have been just as impressive, too. Two epic Zeldas, an epic 3D Mario, the biggest Super Smash Bros. ever, a gorgeous Luigi's Mansion, a 3D Kirby, two solid WarioWares and two fantastic Splatoon sequels are just some of the things I can list. Its only software flaw for me is never getting its own Donkey Kong game.
Switch 2 has big shoes to fill from 1. For now, I just get the sense that it'll be more of the same, but prettier and with one or two new control schemes that its games may or may not fully take advantage of.
My washing machine was 7 years old today. I’m going to celebrate the birthdays of both of these inanimate pieces of equipment by sitting on the washing machine at full spin, while playing a Switch game with gyro aiming turned on.
Why must you remind me of two things? That I’m old, and that the Switch needs its successor last year…..
My switch kinda has sentimental value. My dad bought it for me on launch day for no reason at all. He just knew i was into gaming and took me to gamestop and bought it. I told him he didn't have to but he said it's fine. He passed away about four years ago so it's kinda my last gift i ever got from him.
I waited until July 2017 to get my Switch in the Splatoon 2 bundle. Loved getting the carrying case with it.
I was super interested in getting a Switch back in 2019 when I noticed some other relatives of mine had one. By 2021 thanks to the stimulus checks my parents got I was able to get a Switch. Love the hybrid concept. I once never thought I’d see a Switch in my house until 2021, and here I am now. Here’s to the Switch 2 and whatever it brings (hopefully themes make a return)…
These launch titles are old enough to be declared classics.
I've had A LOT of fun with this system. For me, a gamer of 40+ years, this system was a bit of a "this is your life as a Nintendo gamer". I got to play some of the best of the present and celebrations of the past. I've used the system portable and docked all this time as needed. This system was far from perfect, but I can't think of an all in one good time as I've had with Switch. Definitely will go down as some of my best gaming ever.
Easy 10/10 for me. Been gaming 40 years this year and it’s by far my favourite system. Gets ten times the use of my tethered systems and eve now got 4 in our house with me having upgraded to an OLED. Long ago lost count of how many good games I’ve played on it.

The switch was a bit of a scarecrow for me, outstanding in it's field.
@mariomaster96 I was in 4th grade when I first got my switch and now I'm going to be a senior in high school soon lol
