Koei Tecmo Games and Nintendo are collaborating on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, a new entry to the Hyrule Warriors series. It's the third in the spin-off series, with the original Hyrule Warriors launching in 2014 and Age of Calamity following in 2020.
Taking place before Tears of the Kingdom, the game will feature the classic 'Warriors' gameplay while telling the story of what happened before Nintendo's iconic 2023 Zelda entry on Switch.
Here's some more info directly from Nintendo:
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the newest title in the Hyrule Warriors series and is developed by Koei-Tecmo Games with support from Nintendo. The game features epic battles against hordes of enemies as it tells the untold story from Hyrule's distant past of the Imprisoning War that ultimately led to the events of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Fans of the Legend of Zelda series and players of both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can experience the thrill of battle and this canonical tale featuring Princess Zelda, King Rauru, and other familiar characters. Fight for Hyrule’s future when Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment comes to Nintendo Switch 2 this winter.

I AM SO EXICITED FOR THIS GAME! I was not expecting to see anything I cared about, but here we are. Yunobo better be playable. I AM SO EXCITED!
Good news. I like the series. I like also where is it set in the timeline before TOTK as well.
Would so much rather have another all series Hyrule Warriors than another one set in this continuity, especially since I cared so little about the Zonai plot I didn't even bother to get the last tear before I stopped playing. Probably pass on this one.
So that is episode 3 out of 4 of the current saga? I like that. Better than entirely new stories every time.
@Lizuka Guess different strokes for different folks, huh?
Pffff day oneee
My dream DLC for TOTK would have been you playing as Zelda during the Imprisoning War. This is the closest we're going to get, so I'm interested.
Guess we won't be playing as Link in this one.
Need to see more of this one, but definitely curious, loved both previous entries. But it cannot be that Link won't be playable now, can it?!
Cool, I am hoping to see more unique characters this time around though. Would love to see a Sheikah monk as a playable character
This was so disappointing. Like "new zelda game!" "warriors" ugh. These all feel like they're taking the same game, adding new levels and replacing character models. Like it feels like the lowest effort version of a Zelda game.
I predicted this for the June Direct last year and didn't consider it a possibility for this one.
I wasn't expecting this but I'm definitely interested. I imagine it'll have a decent amount of new characters to fill out the roster.
Heck yeah! I loved AoC so I am ready to break some faces!
Ugh ANOTHER Warriors game set in the BotW style of Zelda AGAIN.
This is the fourth Zelda game with this style. Im sick of it.
And Hyrule Warriors becomes repetitive after 3 hours.
looks absolutely gorgeous cannot wait omg
Biggest fist-pump moment of the show for me. I loved Age of Calamity (although the plot eventually turned a bit too fan-fiction-y). I get that most people don't find this as exciting as a proper new Zelda, but the BotW/TotK-games are some of my favorite games of all time - so any excuse to further explore that incarnation of Hyrule, Link and Zelda are welcome in my book.
TAKE MY MONEY NOW, NINTENDO !!!
Is Age of Calamity going to get the Switch 2 treatment though ? Lord knows it needs it !
God I’m so happy. I LOVE the Hyrule Warriors games.
Now, I can't say I was blown away by this reveal. I'm still looking for upgraded OOT/MM/WW/TP ports. What I CAN say is I am very interested in it and pleased to see that it exists. I was extremely interested to see ancient Hyrule in some form during TOTK, and the fact that this wasn't possible was disappointing. And also...I'd imagine many people are going to be ecstatic to see Zelda as the main character, so that's pretty cool too.
I hope this one fits better, age of Calamity went all alt timeline on us which was so frustrating these setting don't need any nonsense to make them extra relevant, just tell the story.
It's definitely much, much more stable than Age of Calmity on Switch 1 (wow, will that be its new name from now on?), but we'll see if it could be able to run beyond 30fps somehow.
time to hack and slice my way through an army of monsters yet again
While I do enjoy AoC and I am definitely planning on getting this, this does make me worried that we probably won’t get a Kirby warriors game for a few years (if at all).
Oh I am so hyped.
I love the focus on Zelda lately. Green Zelda has already had the spotlight for years. 😉
God, I got bored of the original, love the characters, love the story line (kinda it has time travel always seems like a cop out), but the grind was real on that game
Ganondorf better be playable!
It made sense they would do this. That whole setup they established in ToTK made a Hyrule Warriors set during this period only natural.
Age of Calamity was surprisingly quite nice and I'm saying that as somebody who typically doesn't enjoy most Warriors games. AoC I thought was quite well written too in terms of dialogue and humour, great for co op as well, so I'm looking forward to this.
@Bunkerneath I don't remember AoC being grindy unless you're talking about the very first Hyrule Warriors which I never played. I had AoC beat in 20 hours. Even did it again in co op and I don't remember a grind unless you're talking about fully upgrading everything, doing everything and getting all collectables which remains optional?
PLZ BE LORE ACCURATE
PLZ BE LORE ACCURATE AHHHH
Aiyeee but not Link, not Link... tough choice
This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for after we didn’t get any TOTK DLC.
Perfection.
Please be an actual prequel instead of some time-traveling AU.
Also, playable Gloom Spawn plz Nintendo
Meh, I'd rather have Mushroom Kingdom Warriors. I played some of the original Hyrule Warriors but Age of Calamity just didn't click with me. I highly doubt this will be truly considered canon too.
@YunoboCo
Yun9bo it like 100,100 years into the future ...
One of my big complaints about tears was that we couldn't see Hyrule from 100,100 years ago!
Like the other two HW, this one is likely non-canon as well. May still pick it up but the if story just bothers me sometimes.
What a... Choice by Koei-Tecmo to open a brand new studio, and have their freshman effort be "Zelda assests recycled for a FOURTH time." Guess you gotta train the new staff on something simple.
By the way, Those guys in the masks were spoiled by amiibo announcments that were slipped into the press packet by the way
Maybe I'm old, but I don't consider Hyrule Warriors a game in the Legend of Zelda series, I just don't like it, too much confusion. I want to be honest, I was a little disappointed by this Nintendo Direct because I would have expected at least the announcement that a new Zelda game was in development. Instead, nothing. How many centuries will I have to wait to enjoy a new and true game in the Legend of Zelda series?
These udders have been milked dry already.
Absolutely down for a new Hyrule Warriors and even more so one about that part of Tears of the Kingdom - speaking of, really should finish that before this comes out (should be able to do so relatively easily, but still)!
@Qwiff I second you there. I’m a bit disappointed we aren’t getting that especially after we got echoes of wisdom, I thought maybe we’d get some dlc of a Zelda seperate ways kind of thing. This is ok I guess, I’m not the biggest warriors fan, but I may get it. Hopefully it runs well, age of calamity was a little rough.
This game looks incredible but where was Link in the trailer? İ did not see Link. İ have played both Hyrule Warriors games on the Nintendo Switch. This is the third Hyrule Warriors game.
So what are the chances that we get a limited edition switch 2 console with this game?
Team Attack + Massive Enemy count in a Screen
i hope the Age of calamity has a some Upgrade
What’s the point of limiting themselves ever more than the last game especially when they don’t have the benefit of people assuming this will be “canon” and not some alternative universe thing like last time? TOTK beats you over the head with the imprisoning war as you have certain characters telling you the same thing about it over and over and little of it is actually interesting.
...I just want Hyrule Warriors 2...just take the original and expand on that...
I'm keen to learn more about the Imprisoning War.
Hyped! I just hope they don't pull the "This is the actual story" only for them to turn around and for it to be an alternative take again. Like with Age of Calamity.
@Selim This game is set in the past era where Zelda time-travelled in Tears of the Kingdom. Link didn't time-travel with her, so presumably he won't be in the game. Which I think is great, I'd rather see some fresh new playable characters from the Imprisoning War era than the same ones we already had in Age of Calamity.
@Tyranexx I don't think that will be the case here. They made Age of Calamity into an alternate timeline because that was the only way to give it an ending that wasn't super dark, given how those events happened in the main timeline. But we already know the Imprisoning War ended with Ganondorf's, well, imprisonment. So there's no need for them to come up with an alternative happier ending.
I’m glad for everyone who’s happy, but I really don’t want Breath of the Wild to turn into another Final Fantasy 7 or Star Wars that keeps on spewing out sequels and spin-offs.
We’ve spent plenty of time in this world.
@PinderSchloss Unless they're being super lazy with the designs, the world should look very different from the previous three games though, given that the story is set a hundred thousand years in Hyrule's past.
I played through the whole first game mainly for the story and I'll do the same with this one. I just hope that its canon or if not that the story is at least exceptional.
@ThatZeldaNerd gosh Age of Calamity was a disaster in that regard.
Aside from the whole "Time travel to save everyone", even the characters backstory didn't match at all and some characters were already alive and old with no explanation whatsoever.
The biggest example being Link itself. In BotW is said that it was known that he was the chosen since he was 4 years old and his father was and Hyrule general, but in AoC he is already an adult and nobody knows him (wich doesn't even explain how Mipha got to know him, since they encountered each other only because Link was known to be the chosen), he is just a random soldier.
I hate to be a nerd about it, but when the entire premise of your game is to be a prequel that explain more the past, I don't expect the game to be a completely alternative version where everything is different.
@Polvasti A fair point; no need to revise what was a good ending. My complaint wasn't regarding what happened in Age of Calamity per se, but more the advertising leading up to it. If they'd been up front that it was an alternative take from the beginning, I wouldn't have had any issues. But I was expecting a canon story set before Breath of the Wild. That...isn't exactly what we received. Though it was still a good story and great game.
Ok so, the first game I didn't finish, for the second I had a good friend over and eventually it became quite fun. Dumb but fun. This looks much improved still, might even hold the framerate in the double digits.
@GoldenSunRM nah i thought the game was pretty fun it just would be nice if they did the fans service and paid attention to the story/lore
I knew OoT remake was too good to be true now. but I wouldn't have believed this either. That note, no sign of Link. But I need to know how this games going to run.
@ThatZeldaNerd the gameplay was really good. I agree on that.
If koume and kotake from that one scene aren’t in it, I’m going to actually scream
@Polvasti I loved AOC's ending because I don't think I could have handled the tragedy after seeing it in BOTW. An alternate reality with a happy ending really was good for me and fit with the whole "three Zelda timelines because of Ocarina" that the series had already established. If the timeline can split once, it can split again.
Guess Zelda will be the star again of a game. I'm sure somehow they will find a way to force Link into this. So Age of Calamity was a chance to rewrite history. I guess this one will be more in line to keep history as it was. Either way, it's great for Zelda and Warriors fans.
The alternate take in AoC ruined it for me. They could’ve easily followed the events described in BotW and it would have been EPIC. It still lives rent free in my head:
Defense of Fort Hateno stage would have been an infinite wave of Guardians with increasing difficulty. Player is locked onto Link as their selection and includes a counter tracking how many Guardians are defeated before Link falls. Online rankings to compare your score against others. Could’ve been the most replayed stage of the game. It would not have shocked me if some dedicated players maxed out the counter.
Next stage- Grand Plateau. Link can no longer be selected, Awakened Zelda/King Rhoam default choices. Basic Warriors stage with the goal of securing the Shrine of Resurrection and defending it. End Cutscene- Link is placed in the Shrine, King Rhoam remains to guard over him. Zelda orders the Champions (and their out of time pairs) to their Divine Beasts to open a passage for her and Impa to Ganon.
Final Stage- Awakened Zelda and Impa only. Strict time limit to reach Ganon, failure results in death of Champions cutscene where the Ganonblights resurrect while their focus is on the Hyrule Castle. Reaching Ganon still triggers the cutscene of their sacrifice (time travelers return to their time here). Fight with Calamity Ganon revolves around Zelda setting up sealing points, while Impa provides defense. Final cutscene- Zelda traps Ganon in her seal, but it is imperfect without the Master Sword. As Ganon rages inside, Calamity leaks out. Zelda instructs Impa that she had a vision that Link will one day recover from his wounds and Impa must stay alive to guide him once he does. Then she drives the seal with Ganon and herself into the Depths hoping to contain him until Link returns. But apparently showing the fall of Link or the Champions’ ultimate sacrifice was a bridge too far for Nintendo… can’t have a dark ending now!
I’ve played every main Zelda game and most of the spinoffs, and yeah I will eventually play Age of Imprisonment. But my hopes for the game to remain true to TotK lore is decidedly low. I just do not think Nintendo has the (secret) stones to allow a dark ending. It goes against their very core to not allow the player to ultimately save the day.
@Polvasti There are still dark aspects to the Imprisoning War. The trailer does reference Sonia’s assassination and doesn’t show her in battle, but my first fear is that she’ll be playable. And I feel Rauru’s sacrifice is ripe for getting changed along with Zelda’s ultimate transformation. And of course there’s always a chance Nintendo shoehorns Link into the game somehow. Plenty ways for Nintendo to go offscript.
Imagine a next one of these where you get to control an army of echoes.
