With the newly announced import tariffs for Japan of 24%, will the Switch 2 be 24% more expensive than in e.g, Europe? Will this still be an attractive price to buy for US residents if these tariffs will be charged? Will these tariffs also include games produced outside the US?
If Nintendo has already shipped stock to the US they will likely hope the current price point will maintain momentum so they don’t have to price hike for later shipments. But a lot will depend on how eagerly the S2 initial stock is bought and if their initial price was enough of a buffer to maintain a profit. Usually though Nintendo just holds off on sales or price drops and banks on software adoption to bridge the gap. With essentially a global trade war kicked off, the normal plans don’t apply. However I suspect the pain won’t really sting for another month or two. Then we will see what the market can bear. I hadn’t planned on buying a S2 at launch so I am gonna focus on amiibo, accessories and games. Gonna be a wild ride.
I do think they only have about 50 bucks to safely drop the price. Any more than that (probably) and it turns into a subsidy and then that has a ripple effect nobody wants.
Edit:LOL I was wrong. Guessing the price isn’t enough to hedge the tariffs after all. Sigh. Glad I am waiting.

Oh this is going to get locked once mods wake up. But I didn't get the chance to weigh in on the news article so I'll respond here as politely as I can.
I thought the prices as is were okay. But if they go up even MORE because of tariffs. Yeah I'm done. That prices me out of the market. I cannot afford a $600 Switch 2 or $80-$100 games or anything.
And it makes me so mad. Mad at my country for being gullible enough for Trump's BS. Those of you outside the U.S., you should know that not all of us wanted this (in fact a little less than half of us didn't want this). We tried to get through to these people. We voted for Kamala and tried to encourage others to steer away from Trump. And some of us were cautiously optimistic that we would avert this crisis and vote against him. But it wasn't enough. Trying to get through to these people is like talking to a brick wall. They're too far gone and actually believe that Trump will make the country better. Regardless, I'm completely ashamed of my country. I don't even recognize it anymore. And I really wish I could leave, but packing up and leaving a country is not very feasible economically.
But yeah, I hate this. I hate everything about this situation. I did not vote for or want this in any way, but I still have to deal with this mess all the same.

The price for switch 2 mario kart bundle in norway is 700$.
More than i expected.. but at the same time, thats how much other handhelds costs also.
Will be fun to watch sales Numbers this year. I hope it goes well, would like to see nintendo getting thumbs up for going for more juice in specs.
I’m an American and sure didn’t vote for him. Please stop speaking about us like a monolith. He won the popular vote, yes, but not actually the majority of the vote when you take into account other candidates. And especially when you consider typically under 70% of eligible voters actually vote in most elections, including this one.

From my experience, a lot of Americans were disillusioned with this election to begin with. Both of the major candidates were such dreadful options that it really felt like a 'pick your poison' sort of deal. so not surprising many didnt even bother voting
@-Green-
It’s not even that. Harris was not a bad option, in my opinion, because I vote for administrations, not personalities. I could care less about her - she would have filled her administration with actual experts and people with experience, unlike the current guy.
The communication prior to all this tariff talk was $60 games with the odd $70 game. In line with where the industry was positioned. There has been a crystal clear hike in price preempting tariffs. Trump has been harping on about them for the last 8 years. Just because you don't follow politics until now (smh) don't think companies haven't been aware. $70 games with the odd $80 game. That is Nintendo anticipating tariffs. They are manufactured in Japan and they were assuming a 10% ish tariff (reflected in the price hike.)
Now, they moved console production to Vietnam to avoid them. However, Trump just announced a 46% tariff on Vietnam. FORTY SIX PERCENT! Nintendo don't want to charge $600 for the console so they will frantically be looking at ways of getting that down. Nintendo would tank and Microsoft would buy them (hey, now that is something you'd lobby for lmao!) Unfortunately, one way would be to have other regions subsidise the largest market. So for folk wondering why so high in Europe...that's why. And it's been like that for decades. (Also, don't forget US price doesn't include sales tax - holy f*&(!!!)
So, Vietnam and Japan both got hit with higher tariffs than anyone expected.
Russia got zero tariffs.
Look how much everything is in Japan. That's representative of price point in real terms. The inflation (and this applies to every bloody thing at the moment) is being caused by Trump. 99% of the wealth is owned by 1%. Don't listen to the 1% who want to make America wealthier (connect the dots, it makes THEM wealthier), listen to the 99% who want to make it fairer.
All because the guy with the cameo in Home Alone 2 tapped into the fear and anger of a certain population in this country and convinced them he cared about them.
@GrailUK I'm actually surprised a user on here blatantly defended that man. I'm trying to be civil about Trump and his fans. But, I don't know how his fans didn't see right though him? Trump is a businessman first. He knew what to say to get voted in. What's done is done.
The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.
@TimelessJubilee
Here's the unvarnished truth: his fans consist of the ultra-wealthy who know he's got their back, and the undereducated/desperate who feel as if they've been wronged.
Hate and fear are powerful motivators. And you are right: he's a businessman. He knows how to play people. He's been doing it his whole life, and he found his opportunity to do it on the largest scale possible.

I mean, the establishment Democrats haven't been great and there's definitely issues to be addressed with them, but they're not an absolutely destructive disaster. It's only really a "pick your poison" scenario in the respect that you choose between either being slowly poisoned or being struck by a nuke. But that's not why Trump got elected. Trump got elected because the right wing media machine has a stranglehold on low-information voters and they're stoking them with outrage over fake controversies to the point where they've gaslit them into seeing a completely different reality. MAGA has been compared to a cult numerous times and and psychologists studying the MAGA movement have seen numerous similarities. To put it simply, there's a pretty nasty propaganda machine in this country and about half of the country has fallen prey to it.
@rallydefault This too. The REAL cause of this is the ultra wealthy, who is upset that they're losing control over politics and economics and they've been planning to do this for decades (there's even communications as far back as the 70s on them wanting to implement what's currently happening in the U.S.). This is the rich trying to stick it to the poor and re-raise the hierarchies that have been flattened.
@Tendo64 I certainly hope so. I've started to get more and more involved in political activism since Trump's been re-elected, this is the polar opposite of the direction I want to see this country go (in fact I'm attending a protest tomorrow). So I'm trying to do my part to end this madness. But the issue has always been that this is a democracy and this needs to be more than one person, it needs to be a large movement from the country as a whole. So I'm also waiting to see if the rest of my country will follow suit and fight against it or succumb to the chaos. This is a pivotal moment, not just for video games, not just for U.S. history, but for world history as well and I'm not sure which direction the population is going to go.
