@PikminMarioKirby i didnt even think about the mario movie !! thats releasing in 2026 if im thinking right. i think definitely a teaser for the mario movie 2 in a spetember direct, but what if they went sonic 3/knuckles style and came out with a show about, i dunno, donkey kong or luigis mansion !!!? thatd be awesome !!
not as active as i used to be :(
just finsihed earthbound!
@OctolingKing13 I’d love a DK/Luigi’s Mansion show! I thought DK was really good in the movie so I’d love if he got either his own show or even a movie (possibly with more Kongs and maybe even King K. Rool!). Luigi was also really cool in the Mario Movie, and Luigi’s Mansion would make a great show/movie as well. Boo felt rejected for the Mario Movie, but having a show or movie for Luigi’s Mansion could bring more attention to the species! There’s so many possibilities for Mario universe Movies/Shows!
@PikminMarioKirby I think they'd start the celebrations in March considering they've been making a big deal about Mario Day. Like this year they chose to split their announcements between individual reveals, Mario Day news and a February Partner Showcase instead of doing a normal February general Direct.
I’m gonna try to do a small nintendo tour. Figure I will go to the park in CA and Nintendo NY and probably do a weekend in Tokyo and hit up Nintendo Tokyo.
I imagine there will be themed merch.
Edit: wow this was optimistic. I hadn’t imagined the world would change as much as it did.

@Grumblevolcano Yeah this year they had Mario Movie follow-up announcement and TTYD/LM2HD Release date reveals on Mario Day. They could definitely do it on Mario Day, although June could maybe continue the celebration. I thought there were reports that Nintendo E3 2020 was supposed to have a lot of the Mario stuff, although E3 was canceled that year.
@PikminMarioKirby GAME (the UK retailer) did leak that Lego Mario was meant to be announced in a Direct in March back in 2020. May have been that the original plan was March general Direct on Mario Day with some Mario announcements (e.g. Lego Mario, Origami King, merch and events like presence at the Olympics) and then have more stuff at E3 including the Mario themed booth.
The March Direct Mini that ended up airing in March 2020 did feel cut off like how the "one more thing" was just info on Pokemon DLC.
@Grumblevolcano Yeah I could see it looking similar to that where we hear some Mario stuff on Mario Day, but then hear even more in a June Direct. Although my guess is that the next 3D Mario will be revealed by then!
Mario 35th celebration was half a fiscal year - September 30 to Mar 31, but of course who knows what the schedule would have looked like without covid.
The Mario movie comes out April 3rd 2026, so 3 days after the 35th anniversary might end. So we will certainly get plenty of trailers during the anniversary.
I had originally hoped we would basically re-get stuff from the last two anniversaries - Galaxy 2 finally with or without a 3D all stars re-release, Mario maker 3, and some new Mario-35-like game. Nintendo World Championship makes me feel the last is now unlikely because they are trying a different racing style. The first 2 seem less likely now simply because of the timing of Switch 2 — if a new Mario Kart and 3D mario come 'naturally' that year with Switch 2, do we really even need much else? Perhaps Galaxy 2 has a chance to come anyways so that the Switch-1 owners also get a Mario platformer. Granted this all also depends on the release date of Switch 2.
@FishyS Yeah I think Origami King was probably going to be a part of the celebration, but since they moved the celebration to later, they decided just to just drop the trailer on it’s own. I think that March/June/September all have possibilities for the anniversary to be celebrated, although I think September was chosen for the 35th anniversary was because it was a weird year.
To me it feels like it’s pretty much guaranteed we’ll get a trailer for the Movie at somepoint during the celebration, it would actually be hard to avoid!
A Mario Maker 3 announcement would be a great way to celebrate (and I believe it would be 10 years since the original!) the anniversary, I could see them at least announcing it during the celebrations. We don’t really know what 2D games will come out for Switch’s Successor early on, and Mario Maker 3 is a perfect fit. Could also bring an early online-focused game.
For Galaxy 2, I like the idea of giving Switch 1 owners a 3D Mario. I could actually see that happening, hopefully with a 3D All-Stars re-release.
So it's now 2025 and not sure if anyone's realized, but the original Super Mario Bros. is turning 40 this year(and it doesn't look a day over 28). We already know thanks to the Switch 2 reveal that there's going to be a new Mario Kart game(with overhauled Kotabe/Nakaue-style redesigns to boot), but what else do you think they have planned for the year? For my money they're definitely going to either release or announce the next big 3D Mario alongside it. It's been 7 years since Odyssey and almost 4 since the experimental Bowser's Fury. They're bound to have made progress on the next one by now.

@N00BiSH It doesn't feel like it's been 5 years since the 35th anniversary. That year they celebrated it in September 2020 through March 2021, but supposedly the plans were supposed to be announced at e3 instead of in September. Not sure what approach they'll take this time, but Mar10 Day seems like a good time for some announcement (even if it isn't related to the 40th anniversary).
It's hard to tell what Nintendo will do with this anniversary considering we're in the middle of a console transition, but I think it's pretty much guaranteed we will get something for the anniversary as we have for the other 5-year anniversaries recently.
Maybe they'll make another compilation, that acknowledges Mario Galaxy 2's existence at that, but it seems like enough of a celebration to have a new Mario Kart and 3D Mario game this year.
A yearlong celebration of some sort is inevitable though. They'll either start it in February during a likely Switch 1 Direct or by MAR10 Day at the latest. Mario Movie 2 will also play a role when Nintendo starts talking about that and showing Directs later this September or October.
Getting a 3D Mario this year feels inevitable, but I'm curious if the game itself will be themed around celebrating Mario or not. I feel like that would be a good call for an evolution of Bowser's Fury at this time, but I imagine they'll have something else in mind. Otherwise, it's a bit more up in the air. We're due for a new Mario sports game, Luigi's Mansion 4 could happen this year, and it's being rumored that Ubisoft is going to bundle together both Mario + Rabbids games on the successor, but 2D Mario, Mario Maker, Mario Party, Mario RPGs, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong are all kind of "too soon," whether due to a recent release in the series or the developers behind the projects being preoccupied in the case of Mario Maker. I don't think they'd want to include anything from DK, Yoshi, or Wario in the formal celebrations, either (plus, it's probably too soon for Yoshi after Princess Peach: Showtime, and I think they're going to wait on WarioWare for longer than 2 years after Move It! didn't break one million, so DK and Wario Land are probably the only viable options anyways). Perhaps they've got another new Mario project coming along, like a Warriors game? Personally, I'd kill to see Digital Eclipse create interactive documentaries on Nintendo games, and Super Mario Bros. feels like the game to start with for that.
Since Mario Kart is the Switch 2 release game I am betting 3D mario will be the big holiday game.
In terms of the actual anniversary? I'm sure there will be a Switch 1 Mario related game as well as the Switch 2 big hitters. Maybe a sports game or maybe something 'fun' like another collection or NSO activity.
I still don't really understand why they took Mario 35 away from us. My dream would be they bring it back plus (like Tetris 99) some paid DLC with extra offline content. My super extra dream would be also to have the main race with smb3 as well as smb1.
Personally I never saw the appeal of Mario 35(or any of the other 99 games that weren't Tetris). It just seemed like they were trying to tack on battle royale mechanics to a game that wasn't really suited to that style of play.
"Now I have an obligation to tag along and clear the area if Luigi so much as glances at a stiletto."
@N00BiSH A matter of taste I suppose. I personally felt like Pacman 99 didn't make that much sense but that the concepts worked really well for Tetris 99, Mario 35, and F-Zero 99 (even though I rarely play the latter). Mario 35 was easily one of my favorite games on Switch — it was just such fun chaotic play that ran really well compared to Mario Maker races and had some fun and interesting strategies. I played about 40 hours before it vanished.
I would love for it to return in some form but I am skeptical because Nintendo seems to be experimenting with other types of platforming races in e.g. Mario Wonder and Nintendo World Championship.
I think it would be cool if 3D Mario turned out to be Mario Maker 3D. It would fit with giving a purpose to the teased mouse mode and also the original Wii U Mario Maker game turns 10 in September.
@Grumblevolcano As someone who has played a lot of various types of 3D platformer maker levels... most people are so awful at making levels 😆 That's true with 2D also, but much worse with 3D. And they're much harder to make. I wouldn't say no to a 3D mario maker but it wouldn't be the huge seller that a new mainline 3D game would be.
@Grumblevolcano If we're talking 3D Land and World, maybe they could find a way to make that work? I can't see a Galaxy or 64 Maker working because those are pretty complex.
"Now I have an obligation to tag along and clear the area if Luigi so much as glances at a stiletto."
@N00BiSH I mean... there is a mario 64 maker unofficially/fan game and it works remarkably well but I suspect most people would get frustrated with it somewhat quickly.
