@FishyS Yeah that's why I'm averse to the whole idea. The Mario Makers being 2D is a benefit as it makes the designing process simple and intuitive. Anyone can make a 2D Mario game with those tools. Not everyone can make a competently designed 3D Mario.

@FishyS I was looking at it that Nintendo managed to make 2D course creation more accessible so I think they'd somehow find a way to be able to do the same with 3D. Also Mario Maker 2 had its own story mode which consisted of Nintendo made courses using the tools so if Mario Maker 3D was to happen, I think they'd do one for that.

@N00BiSH I was thinking more of the exploration based 3D Mario games like 64.

@Grumblevolcano Would a 3D Mario Maker have multiple game modes? 3D World and 64 feel most likely out of all of them. I love the idea of basically an infinite amount of SM64 levels, that is one of my favorite games of all time!

A 3D Mario Maker story mode would be very fun. I liked the idea of official levels in SMM2, and it’d be really cool for them to expand upon it in 3D!

A Mario Maker would be a very good fit for the anniversary, wasn’t SMM1 a part of the 30th anniversary?

@PikminMarioKirby Yes, for multiple styles I was thinking:

  • 64
  • Sunshine
  • Galaxy (including Galaxy 2 stuff like Yoshi)
  • Odyssey
  • Bowser's Fury

Alternatively if they wanted an extra step before reaching that phase, they could use the Mario Maker 2 styles and introduce the concept of remaking 2D games in 3D. Expanding on what the Paper Mario franchise has attempted with Super Paper Mario and Paper Mario Color Splash.

Ever since Mario's 25 year anniversary, I wanted to see another go at Super Mario All-Stars. I know we got Super Mario All Stars on the Wii at that time, but back when it was announced, I wanted to see the game in a new art style.

I always really liked the hand drawn artwork of all of the Mario characters, and I've always wanted to see Super Mario All-Stars with art just like that. Obviously, not at the expense of changing any of the gameplay elements, just a new coat of paint that would bring the original 2D artwork to life.

@Grumblevolcano I think 64, Galaxy, and 3D World/Bowser’s Fury are the most likely. Odyssey and Sunshine are doable, but would likely be much harder with their game’s locations. Also if they were to ever make a 3D Mario Maker 2 they might not want to do all game modes right away.

I could see there being just one mode for all the 3D World/Bowser’s Fury/3D Land like they are seemingly doing for New Super Mario Bros (U) in the first Mario Maker games.

It would be great to see Nintendo go all out on Mario's 40th with a new 3D Mario, 3D Mario Maker, new collectibles, or something else awesome that none of us could possibly dream up but is also exactly what we always wanted. But I'm bracing for the reveal of "(Not So) Super Mario All Ztars", a collection featuring spruced up remakes of Mario is Missing, Mario's Time Machine, and Mario Teaches Typing.

Since Super Mario and I share the same birth year I am hoping for a nice blow out. I am saving to go to one of the stores and one of the theme parks (not sure which one or country yet) and getting lots of merchandise that essentially says I’m 40 as well. Basically what I did when I turned 30 lol.

Holy cow, we’re almost there. The next 3D Mario is a given, but I’d also like a new Mario Tennis.

If I were to guess what the big 40th anniversary game will be, I'd probably go with a new Mario Maker of some kind.

The only thing that's pushing me towards this over everything else is SMM2's absence from the list of games getting free updates. It's crying out for mouse controls and yet Big Brain Academy managed to elbow its way to the front of the queue.
So, maybe that means a new one isn't too far away?

@Nintoz Although I would love that, 'not too far away' could mean a year or two.

Since we don't have a new 3D Mario, I'm half convinced the missing 40th anniversary game will be a galaxy double pack which is something which could easily be on the shelf already and work for both Switch 1 and 2.

@FishyS That's true. Also, if EPD10 would be developing it, it would be quite surpring to see it this Autumn and launching relatively soon seeing how they managed to pump out Pikmin 4 and Mario Wonder only two years ago but I guess it depends on the scale of the project.

@Nintoz I think if we're getting a new Switch 2 Mario game this year aside from Mario Kart, it'd be Mario Maker 3. 3D Mario will likely be 2026 since we have DK this year, and releasing next year would work well with the new movie, so I don't see that coming this year. I agree that SMM2 not getting a free update is suspicious, I think if it was going to be a long time for Mario Maker 3, they'd just add the mouse controls to SMM2, like they're seemingly doing for Game Builder Garage. Mario Maker 1 released for Mario's 30th anniversary, so I think it's very possible we could get another one for the 40th.
