After Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, it was only a matter of time before Tribute and Dotemu assembled once again on another project, and assemble they have.
Marvel: Cosmic Invasion is a retro-inspired beat 'em up that will see Earth's mightiest heroes get the Shredder's Revenge treatment later this year. And it looks wicked.
From what we've seen so far, you'll be able to play as the likes of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Storm, Nova, Venom and more in a side-scrolling arcade-style adventure. There's multiplayer, there's gorgeous pixel art and a retro-sounding soundtrack (Tee Lopes, is that you?), there's even a cool animated trailer showing the heroes in action. What more could you want?

Here's the official description from the reveal trailer:
A cosmic battle awaits! After Annihilus launched an unprecedented attack across the galaxy, all life hangs in the balance. Nova, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Phyla-Vell, Captain America, and many more heroes, both Earth-born and cosmic, will join forces in a star-spanning brawling adventure against the deadly Annihilation Wave.
From New York City to the depths of the Negative Zone, the future of the universe will be fought across the stars in MARVEL Cosmic Invasion!
Cosmic Invasion will be punching onto Switch this 'holiday season' — which gives us just about enough time to watch that Doomsday cast announcement video again...
What do you make of this one? Assemble in the comments and let us know.

God the pixel art looks so dang good! Also the character switching looks like it will do a great job stringing together combos.

I'm always down for more beat 'em ups, one of my favorite genres.
Can't wait to play this with ma boy 😁
This looks great. I might get it if it runs well. But I wonder what other many more heroes are playable as well.
Was looking for the DotEmu logo through the whole trailer
The Tribute Games art style is just a touch twee for me in these beatemups, but it could be much much worse
A brand-new Marvel-centric beatemup in the year of our lord 2025 would've already been enough to pique my interest, but the fact its coming from the same devs behind Scott Pilgrim and TMNT Shredders Revenge make this an easy Day-One purchase for me, cannot wait XD

also I love all the MvC references they chucked in with the character sprites, great touch
More excited for this than any other game from the direct.
Day One buy for me. By far the coolest thing from the Direct.
At exactly 1 minute, wait is that Captain Falcon???
I've just recently played TMNT. It's good but I'm not sure how many more times I'll play it. It was good for a weekend. It did capture that 90's arcade beat 'em up vibe.
As a huge fan of X-men Arcade back in the 90's, I'm interested. I also sort of wish this game had some other marvel characters or just X-men but that's me being picky.
Looks great to me based on what we've seen of this, definitely interested in it myself!
@Fizza Will get it for retro Storm
@ParadoxFawkes You have a problem with demons and witchcraft?
In hindsight, i wonder why it took so long for something like to get made? The idea just seems right. It looks great too.
A great homage title to classic MARVEL games of the past such as X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse, X-Men: The Arcade Game, MARVEL Super Heroes in War of the Gems, The Amazing Spider-Man, Maximum Carnage, Separation Anxiety, X-Men 2: Clone Wars, and Captain America and the Avengers. Definitely looking forward to it. I'm more excited for this game than MARVEL Rivals.
Nice. I'm a little burned out by beat 'em ups at the moment but I will try this eventually.
@Bunkerneath It's Nova. The character appears more time during the trailer.
@ParadoxFawkes Uhhh… the Marvel universe is filled with witches and demons… but you do you.
My initial impression was that yet-another Shredder's Revenge inspired game was coming, but no this is actually the same devs! Good on them.
Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Rita's Rewind, and even Toxic Crusaders are a direct result of the success of Shedder's Revenge after all.
Melhor anuncio da direct
Yesss, I was hoping this studio would make a marvel game! Loved their work on TMNT and streets of rage
I’ve been looking forward to this announcement for a few years. My best mate worked on the animation for a few of the characters shown off in the trailer - Spider Man, Venom and Storm!
This looks great! My inner 90s kid is smiling with glee.
My kinda thang actually. So I am down.

That you said it's by the same developer behind the TMNT game, now you have my attention! Definitely one to watch in an otherwise disappointing Direct.

Please let this mean we're getting MVC4
@ParadoxFawkes They are videogames set in fictional worlds, how the hell are they ‘very serious things’.
This looks incredible! I literally could not have asked for a better game!!!
@ParadoxFawkes In all my time being a member here, this is the first I’ve heard of someone saying witches are real. I’m sure you have proof of this do you? But while you’re at it, do you think these games are purposefully promoting witchcraft because of the demons or because it makes for fun gameplay casting spells and building unique battle teams?
Do you take everything else in fiction at face value also?

The pixel art looks as beautiful as ever
Yeah… I’m done with cult members, so there’s another for the ignore list!
But now I really, really, really hope the Scarlet Witch, Nightcrawler, Ghost Rider, et. al. make the playable roster for this game, lol
It also seems like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is almost totally forgotten at this point.....
Same team eh? Guess I'll hold off until the inevitable roster updates with Psylocke/Hulk, Spider-ham/Howard the duck.
@Warioware Completely different franchise that uses the same source material. You could’ve replaced MUA3 with Marvel vs. Capcom and it would’ve been the same sentiment.
@ParadoxFawkes Dude, there is zero proof of any of it. The people that believe in witchcraft want to believe in it. They make it ‘real’ via mass suggestion and weak application of logics and physics.
This sticks so closely to Capcom’s classic MvC animations, I was half expecting to see a Capcom logo at the end. Talk about copying homework.
This looks great, I hope they add Psylocke as a playable character. They just have to. 😭
Venom better be double cheeked up or I'm not playing it.
The enemies look braindead in the footage; like they just sit around while you’re beating up their comrades. I’m worried about that. It looks.. too easy?
Nice classic costumes and MvC style sprites- I’m glad this is leaning in to that 90s sweet spot for Marvel
@dkxcalibur
I think the overwhelming opinion is going to be that this needed to be either X-Men or X-Men and Spider-Man instead of being a sprinkling of them while everything else is at the mercy of what characters Disney wants to push for meta/MCU reasons like they’ve done in the past.
Interesting character choices... there must be more they haven't shown, some big hitters missing. Maybe DLC?

Another one to pick up. This looks glorious!
@ParadoxFawkes Dude… are you trying to get yourself banned?
This is exactly what I have been wanting! Sega's SPIDER-MAN, Data-East's CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE AVENGERS, and Konami's UNCANNY X-MEN are three of my favorite arcade games of all-time. After the perfection of SHREDDER'S REVENGE, I could not be more excited as this looks to be a great homage to those three titles.
What's the release date?
@Jawz32U
Holidays. Probably Thanksgiving.
Storm? Sold. Gimme game. Gimme right now.
@jufonuk
PREACH!
@Warioware which is unfortunate as it was a good game with a lot of dlc to extend it.
@Gazzils pretty sure the voice over guy said 15 playable character so definitely a handful more to be revealed plus as you say I'd imagine there'd be post launch dlc. With a character library as vast as marvel there's so much potential for additional content
Yep that's got my name all over it !!
Current roster leaves a lot to be desired. But I am beyond excited to see this one. There was an article on here once that discussed possible hypothetical beat-em-up titles that people might like to see, and a new Marvel game was what I commented about. AND NOW, here it is. Totally awesome.
At risk of losing my Marvel Fan Card, what version of Nova has flowing red hair? And is that Captain Marvel with the sword? Same question: when was that a thing??
Wow this looks awesome 😁
This and metroid were the only two games I want this direct
Thinking about it, that is a pretty strange line-up of characters. You could easily have an X-Men game with Cyclops and Psylocke as well, an Avengers game with Iron Man, Thor and Vision, a Spidey game with Black Cat added and a Fantastic Four game with those characters. I would buy all four of those games without question - hopefully it does end up like that.
@Chocobo_Shepherd
I got your back, true believer!
The version of Nova with flowing red hair is Richard Rider from the 90s, specifically during the early New Warriors era and his solo adventures. This long hair craze became standard especially in some of the 90s runs (even The Punisher got a ponytail for a while). As for Captain Marvel with the sword, it's Phylla-Vell, who took up the Captain Marvel mantle in the Annihilation storyline (2006). She was created by Peter David during his Captain Marvel (Genis-Vell) run in the early 2000's. Um... 'Nuff said. Excelsior and stuff.
Is it side scrolling? Only the elevator level seems to be moving, which is still a fixed space. They look more like arena levels, with enemies dropping in, like the SoR4 dlc.
This was my highlight in the announcements.
@ParadoxFawkes I work with a maniac like you, it’s exhausting… Andrew?
Looks right up my alley. Easy day 1
I'm hype so far. My beat 'em up pal who loves Marvel brawlers is gonna flip over this. Dotemu and Tribute? Winner. Gonna be eyeing this all the way.
If I had to guess they will add even more heroes like; Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, Punisher and maybe even Hulk (if he's not "too big").
@juliobrand woowwww that's so cool!! Thank you very much for that info!
I was big into Marvel in the early 90s. That was my peak era, but I clearly didn't read much with Nova. 2000 ~ 2010 I sort of took a break from comics. So that explains how I missed that version of Captain Marvel.
Very exciting though!! I love the direction they are going with this game!!
@ParadoxFawkes Calling someone a poor, blind, silly person because they don't believe that a game is promoting Witchcraft is so absurd and ironic that it stops being fun. Let's say that they are real. Even then... you do know that wouldn't mean that they are promoting it right? Regardless of that, ghosts, witches, demons, dragons, aliens and other topics are used in the entertainment industry simply because they are interesting. By your logic, the Halloween movie promotes serial killers, Care Bears promotes that all bears are cuddly and loving and Mario promotes jumping on turtles and eating funny looking mushrooms.
Anyway, to stay on topic and directed to everyone else that isn't crazy, the game looks awesome and it's practically a sure thing that I'll buy it day one. Can't wait to play as Nova. Acording to Steam, it will have 15 playable characters so there's 8 that they haven't revealed yet.
I absolutely hate this artwork. Byrne, Cochrane, Adams , Portacio, Lee... nope, let's make it look like Marvel Super Hero Squad.
Here's hoping that Sony doesn't again block Spider-Man from being in the Switch version!
@T317 It has to be kind of weird, though. They have to balance the well known characters like Wolverine and Cap with the characters who actually appeared in Annihilation, and even most of the known characters from Annihilation looked a lot different to what most people would know.
Though they oddly went with the 90's Pony Tail Nova too...
@Spider-Kev They can't block Spider-Man from being in Switch games. He was in Ultimate Alliance 3 and the MvC collection.
I hope we get a Marvel Compilation series!
Spider-Man (Atari)
Spider-Man (GB/C/A)
Spider-Man (SNES)
Spider-Man (N64/Dreamcast/PS1)
@Mommar they have before!
Looks great! If you haven't already, I recommend reading the Annihilation comics. Very good reads!
Very nice we got a good team working on this one. It should be good.
What happened to the Toxic Crusaders beat'em up?
@Spider-Kev Where?
@StraTTtheRipper It's on Steam, and isn't very good.
@Mommar
My bad, it was Xbox that wasn't allowed to have Spider-Man in Avengers, yet was available on the PS version!
@Wisestfool yeah I know, seeing this just reminded me that I own MUA3 and pretty much forgot and also nobody seemed to mention it after it had been out for a couple of months. Didn't like it anyway but this looks far more interesting to me
@Ryu_Niiyama couldn't get into it myself, everybody felt underpowered for superheroes and it just didn't click. Glad that it did for some though.
@Serpenterror great taste in games there. Yeah I’m excited for more on this one. It was probably my favorite suprise of the direct. If it’s true there are more characters to be revealed who would you like to see round this out?
@Warioware It definitely clicked for me, managed to put 200 hours into it before the constant grind lost its shine. Your post made me boot it up again to see where I fell off and it was the DLC. I still have one last character to unlock and a handful of rift missions to clear, so maybe I’ll return to it when the mood strikes.
@dkxcalibur gotta play TMNT with some friends like you're in the Arcades of old. Ups the replay value a lot
@Wisestfool actually this conversation is making me wonder if I should give it another try! Maybe I will redownload it and see if it clicks or if any patches make it click for me.
@NeonPizza I don't know, but I see as contradictory saying that people interested in this game are hung up by nostalgia while mentioning that the genre used to be enjoyable in the 80s-90s. Maybe the game that doesn't appeal to you was simply enjoyable and had a reason to be well received, which is something that a lot of people seem to struggle with. You not enjoying it doesn't mean that it's a bad game and it also doesn't mean that there's no room for more beat'em ups. Maybe you just need to rest from the genre.
As for beat'em ups becoming repetitive, I'd say that nowadays it's precisely when they are more varied than ever. It's a fact that the likes of Shredder's Revenge actually offer more gameplay depth than revered classics like Turtles in Time or Final Fight simply because they have more characters, moveset variety and better ways to chain combos. It's also a genre that feels repetitive to many because just like with fighting and hack n' slash/musou games, they button mash their way through them and don't take advantage of the gameplay because they usually are very accesible as basic knowledge of the controls and perseverance can be enough to finish them. It's a double edged sword .
@NeonPizza You could say the same about every genre. I don't see any racing game reinventing the genre, platformers, jrpgs, etc. Also, reinventing isn't always a positive aspect. There's a reason why genres stick to their formulas as that's what attracts fans. Again, it's important for people to understand when a genre simply isn't for them or they just got tired of it. Products aren't made to catter specifically to an individual, they are directed to a collective.
They are using a cherished franquise, yes. But they aren't just doing that, they are also delivering very good products for fans of the genre. There's several games of dubious quality that completely depend on their licences for selling that can't come close to these games. Rita's Rewind is precisely a good example of a licensed game falling short, and it wasn't because it didn't have enough unique gameplay elements. It was because it was an OK beat'em up. Games like Shredder's Revenge appealed to people with little to no knowledge about the TMNT simply because it was very fun.
I disagree about beat'em ups overstaying their welcome. That aspect is very subjective and it's something that people demand in order to consider them "worth buying". Still both SR and RR are a couple hours long in story mode, which is considered "short". Maybe somewhat longer than old beat'em ups but games as a whole have become longer than they were because of demand. Fans of the genre play them for the combat elements just as fans of racing games play them to race. Weird ideas and different gameplay elements might be fun for a short while but aren't necessary. Games overstaying their welcome has always been a really weird critique to me as you can simply stop playing the game at whatever point you aren't having fun anymore. Stages/levels during too much is more understandable but I'd say that old beat'em ups and games in general had more problems with that than current entries.
I understand wanting new experiences, but at that point is up for the person to search for that. Demanding that from developers decades after all those genres were invented in a way more competitive and saturated market than it used to be is unfair. They simply should do what they do well. If they have new ideas great, but a solid game is much more important than reinventing a wheel that might suck on its new version.
i really wish i was into beat em ups. they look like they should be so much fun, but i just cant get myself to have fun or care while playing them.
