Virtual Game Cards

Nintendo has announced 'Virtual Game Cards' for Nintendo Switch, effectively turning your digital games into 'game cards'. This will be applied via a system update in late April.

The new feature will effectively allow you to easily move digital games from one Switch to another, and even allow for lending between family members for up to two weeks. And yes, it's been confirmed that this will also work for Nintendo Switch 2.

It feels like a very Nintendo way of handling digital game transfers, but we like the concept. Thanks to this new tool, we'll be able to move games between systems and even between friends with ease (hopefully), though we're going to need to see a couple more details before we're completely sold on the idea.

At the time of writing, it sounds like once a Virtual Game Cart is moved to another system, it will be unplayable on the system you moved it from — until you move it back, that is. Sounds solid in principle, but that might prove to be a little fiddly in practice, especially if we have to do that with our entire Switch 1 libraries as we move over to the new system.

We'll have to wait until the free system update in April to find out everything this feature has to offer, but if you're keen to catch up on every detail we know so far, you'll find our guide below.
