'Nintendo Today', A New Mobile App, Will Deliver Fresh Switch 2 News Every Day

I'm good.
I can always get Nintendo games news from this website Nintendolife or from play-asia.

I really hope that they just casually announce genre-defining titles on this silly little mobile app.

Well this is kinda interesting.

Interesting idea tbh. I'll give it a download because why not.

That said, only making an app and not also having a website seems a bit silly to me.

It has potential. Hopefully it is integrated into the Switch home screen.

Looks great! Probably the most exciting announcement in the Direct for me, though that's not saying much.

Hopefully, it'll be a way for Nintendo to get news out ahead of leakers, as well as quelling a lot of rumours which take up so much space on Nintendo-related websites in recent times.

...and if it offers a 'social' side, ala Miiverse or Miitomo, all the better.

Yeah, this sounds like it is aiming for consumers who don't already check sites like these. Sites like these, Nintendolife, will probably not die right away, if ever. The reasoning is simple: They are not Nintendo themselves. They can be honest, when Nintendo won't, because Nintendo wants to sell a product.

This news as most of the direct was extremely meh. Shocked that Nintendo didn't have something really interesting to show on this direct, except -obviously- for Metroid Prime 4.

I thought this was more like a jazzed-up Ninty daily calendar with fun facts, curios and free illustrations to mark special events rather than sharing specific Switch 2 news after 2nd April. Might want to update the post @Olliemar28 to remove ambiguity ^_^

Given what's been going on with the current state of social media(especially in regards to Twitter), I can understand why this app exists. After all, Nintendo Directs were created partly because they didn't want deal with stuff like E3. Apply that same logic here and it makes a lot more sense.

Man, when Shigeru came on I thought we were getting a Zelda movie cast announcement lol. Ah well. This seems pointless. I have Nintendo Life for news. Why exactly do I need this?

I personally have no desire for this app and I feel it's a bit goofy.

Meh. Not for me. I prefer getting my Nintendo news from here and YouTubers because I like the editorial aspect of 3rd parties.

I think there's more to this app than just news, wasn't there like 'Pascal's Tales' or something cute like that.
I think it'll just be a quirky little hub to visit every now and again.

Leakers will still exist. The "new thing" will be people hacking Nintendo servers to get the jump on upcoming releases of information.

Announcing a Nintendo designed phone app at the end was chucking the whole direct into a black hole, even with the gift of the most recent footage of glorious Miyamoto to date

I really love this so much. Nintendo is becoming less and less reliant on other services to push their own information and content out.
We got the music app, the Nintendo online chat app, and now this news app. I love that for them and it feels like they’re in pursuit of being a fully independent content company. Go Nintendo!
EDIT: Fear not, NintendoLife, I will still always come here for my news too. I can bet you the Nintendo Today app won’t have those fire puns and this community is unmatched.

@N00BiSH Yeah this makes a lot of sense for Nintendo, they can avoid relying on social media.

An official Nintendo news app is VERY interesting, depending on how big these announcements are. I wouldn’t think they’d announce big games simply on an app. Still, a daily update of game info straight from the Big N sounds cool. The decorative bells and whistles are just nice touches.

This reminds me of when Sakurai would give frequent, if not daily updates for Smash Bros. games on Miiverse for Smash 4 or the Smash Bros. Dojo blog for Brawl. I loved those!

Maybe I'm old fashioned but I prefer to get my daily news from (relatively) impartial journalists while joining the crowd on YouTube for the big events like Directs.

Damn! Nintendo must have been extremely pissed over all of the Switch 2 leaks to go so far as create their own news app. I don’t blame them though. Rumors and leaks get way too much coverage, here, and on other gaming news sites.

Some of the examples given for the app looked more like a social platform than actual news, so I'm not concerned about websites like this. Would be cool if they merged the Switch's News button with Nintendo Today, but that might not happen until Switch 2.

Personally, I think this is great. Why worry about managing multiple accounts on questionable third party software when you can just make your own unfiltered news distribution app directly to the customer, and rely on the customers then sharing to the info to the third parties themselves. Everyone can verify what is official news because it is right there on the app. Why is it an app instead of just the website? I imagine it was designed with the average Japanese salaryperson student in mind, riding the busy morning train to work, Switch left at home, doom scrolling through their phone for 20 minutes: now they can be like “oh yeah, Nintendo” just click on the app on their phone and get a few minutes of articles, fun extras, wallpapers direct from Nintendo before they arrive at the office. A few thoughts: wish there was a central Nintendo app instead of the multiples we have right now. Also… man wasn’t RSS the best idea ever? So sad it did not take off the way it should have because everyone plugging into official feeds carefully curated on their own choice of RSS Reader is always going to be the best solution for this problem.

The news on Switch is really slow and always announces things by the time you've heard it from 50 other sources, so hopefully this time this app will actually be useful!

Fun idea but no thx, in this day and age were everything needs a app, I try to minimise the amount of apps on my phone, and do as much as possible via the browser.

Saves A TON of battery in stand-by too.

All for it. Every big game company should do this, same as pivoting to Directs rather than E3 and the like. Cut out the middlemen. I don't check most gaming sites anymore because they've all become what Destructoid recently sank into. They all have zero integrity and dollar signs for eyes so we may as well just have everything come from through chipper biased Nintendo Power-esque coverage anyway. NL is really the last bastion of me caring about games journalism if only because it stays on track and the comments are generally engaging.

I think nintendo life will be fine. This app is just for news regarding their games,systems,etc. With probably direct links to the official site. Meanwhile ni tendolife covers more then just nintendo games and systems but also interesting opinion pieces and the like so I'll still visit even after downloading the app.

This app is actually pretty cool! You can keep up to date on all sorts of in-game events and release dates and all that. I like it.

The app is out on iOS and is pretty cool. Good calendar and date overview widgets.

Not for me personally but considering the climate of social media nowadays I can understand why Nintendo made this.

@Coolmusic I was more or less thinking the same thing. Social media is so toxic, at least I don't need to go on the site formerly known as Twitter and Facebook to get my gaming news.

I probably won’t get this. Just tell me price and launch games and that’s all i need. And let me know when the Zelda edition comes out.

Switch already gives the news. Why another app on your phone to drain it even faster?

After experimenting with it a bit, it seems like the biggest draw for it right now is the calendar widget it provides!

You can customize what gets included onto the calendar by series, and it marks release dates, in game events, etc.

I missed more than a few things like the Tetris 99 events and a couple Splat Fests because I simply forgot about them on the day(s) they were happening. Having them on a widget and keeping that info right at hand is a great improvement!

Will this be as popular as Miitomo?

This app makes a lot of sense. They created the Nintendo Direct originally as a way to share news directly to the consumer because traditional media sites kept muddy-ing up their messaging during the late Wii/DS era and the 3DS's launch. But they still made announcements themselves on social media platforms (primarily Twitter).

In the time since then, social media in general has become a clusterf*ck in the age of the "algorithm", with fake news, engagement bait, click bait, and rumor mongering run rampant. Twitter has become especially toxic.

This app allows them to skip all of that, not rely on social media and give those announcements directly in their own feed on their own platform. It also doubles as a sort of spiritual successor to the Smash Dojo. Oh, and you get all news in one place rather than having to follow multiple accounts for things like tournaments or mobile game events.

Do we think that the news categories they ask you to choose from might mean that some news on those franchises is incoming next week?

I see it as more them not wanting to be dependent on other companies.

Think about it, if Google one day said "Nintendo. Do what we say or well block all Nintendo content ... They'd be in a rough spot. We've already seen that happen with some credit card companies making demands or cutting off payments to site and services they"won't support".

So this could be Nintendo just making sure they have a news pipeline they control.

Anything that gives Nintendo and excuse to walk away from Twitter is a good thing

I'll give it a download, because why not? But that doesn't mean I'll stop checking my usual web sources for news. This might cut down on how much time I spend cluttering my Outlook calendar however.

Just tried it on my iPad. It looks like there's going to be some cool daily content. Currently, there's information about SMB World 1, a Xenoblade performance, a Shiver performance, backstory on Metroid, a Breath of the Wild gallery, etc.

Of course, like nintendo music app, this app is not available in my country. Why nintendo, I can buy nintendo switch here and buy region 1 games, just make the app available worldwide

i LOVE this even if its a little useless. The animated UI, game themes and ridiculousness of it screams old nintendo

If used right it could be valuable. At the very least, Nintendo could control their news better, which might help reduce so many leaks. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what it's like.

Just downloaded it, and it's what I thought it would be: a cute little time waster, with the perk of important news sprinkled in. Definitely not the same as actual blogs like NintendoLife. Plus you can add a calendar to your home page, which is almost the best part of downloading it!

An propetary news source for news, it sounds similar to the Playstation Blog, except the way they work is completely different... It seems like a good replacement for any random Twitter/X announcement, but also has the promise of giving Switch 2 news every single day, big and small

Its not a terrible idea, although part of me kind of hopes that with these apps like Parental Control, Music, NSO and finally Nintendo Today maybe we should combine them into one app.
