Talking Point: Which Switch Game Needs A 'Nintendo Switch 2 Edition' The Most?

I don’t want any $70 Edition games, but I’d love free enhancements to make loading times for Animal Crossing New Horizons and Pikmin 4 shorter.

Also Scarlet and Violet need a Switch version first before we talk about Switch 2

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is arguably the worst-running OG Switch game. 240p sub 30-fps in spots. After that, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

I don't want to buy it again aa a Switch 2 Edition but if they offer free 60fps or resolution upgrades on Switch games I think Kirby And The Forgotten Land would look amazing!

Really what I most want is the Danganronpa games since they were dream Switch ports for years but the versions they went with aren't great. 1's functional enough but 2 struggles outdoors and V3 just has a lot of problems.

I would hope these are free upgrades or at the very least, cheap. Otherwise, nope. Not interested. I already didn't like Nintendo charging full price for Wii U ports on Switch, but you could at least argue they weren't available otherwise.

I’m not sure I can follow the logic that it would be difficult to justify a Mario Maker 3. I think that game shows off mouse mode. Then you bring back Amiibo support, add a wonder mode (using those dramatic 2D effects from that patent to make HD2D wonder effects on classic art styles)
I think this game would have a lot to offer and effortlessly so

TOTK and BOTW could come with a 60fps, higher resolution and improved textures. I dream to have a Zelda the same way as the first trailer we got.

I can't imagine they're high priority games, but ones I would love to see get a performance boost would be Rune Factory 5 and Chess Ultra. The latter runs absolutely terribly (like 4-6 frames per second when a piece moves), and RF5 has some nausea-inducing frame stuttering when moving the camera around. And as far as I'm aware it's only on Switch and PC, so I would imagine the potential for it to run better must be baked into the code...

I think being first party Nintendo games (and insanely popular ones at that), BotW and TotK would be top of the priority list of getting an upgrade.

Also, the load times for Ori and Blind Forest were shockingly bad — although I found that they improved massively after moving them to internal storage...

I guess also that I might be perfectly satisfied with all of the Nintendo published Switch games!

Almost every game needs an upgrade haha i see the switch really struggling with the latest games.

@The-Chosen-one it's interesting that this is the reverse of how 8/16/32-Bit era games used to be — towards the end of their lives, devs were already well-acquainted with the hardware and would manage to get almost next-generation-level performances out of ageing consoles (although I imagine having bigger ROM size carts helped that...)

Definitely felt like they improved with each game, especially in handheld mode 2 was extremely messy both visuals and performance wise with DE having its moments of lower resolution and some frame drops but much better, further improving with 3 and with X it feels like the best the franchise has ever looked in handheld mode and feels generally even more stable than DE and 3.

interested to see what kind of magic they work with the switch 2 over its lifetime.

See I want to say Pokémon Scarlet and Violet but its problems aren't due to the Switch being unable to run it properly. It feels rushed, lacks polish, and it very poorly optimized for the hardware. The game itself needs to be built better.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 would be super dope to see get cranked up. And give me a 4K Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Increased horsepower might help the pop in, dropped frames, and slowdown in Animal Crossing: New Horizons as well. My island has a lot of stuff set up and it gets pretty laggy when I run through the more densely populated areas.

does make me hope theres a base level boost to things like framerate and load times similar to playing games on a "pro" system, not expecting 30fps games to suddenly be 60 since that would need a patch but hoping they can hit their target easier.

Scarlet and Violet absolutely need it the most, though I would hope that even just it running natively on the Switch 2 could get the game to a stable 30fps. I voted for Astral Chain otherwise, though. I enjoyed the time I put into it, but it's the kind of game that really should be at 60fps, and that boost would make me go back. Would also love to see Kirby and the Forgotten Land, the Pikmin titles, the Zelda games (every single new one plus Link's Awakening), Xenoblade X, and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD/3 get boosts, and for Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition to hit 60fps in handheld. However, I'm still not convinced that this won't just be their branding for cross-generation releases. I think Nintendo is more likely to just issue patches for most games instead of overhauling anything visually, with maybe a few exceptions (BOTW is rumored to get the full treatment, and I imagine some partner companies/subsidiaries will have free rein to do as they please - a Xenoblade 2: Definitive Edition feels inevitable to me, especially now that X is no longer the black sheep of the series).

I think a lot of the impossible ports should get some sort of upgrade boost or like a visual upgrade like witcher3, outer worlds, both dooms, Hogwarts legacy, and many more. With the first party games I think TOTK really has problems struggling so a 60fps would be awesome and a just a 60fps patch for most of there games with better resolution would be nice.

@PikminMarioKirby I imagine these "Switch 2 editions" would be either a free upgrade like Xbox does or a $10 upgrade like Playstation does rather than a full blown $70 re-release.

As someone who waited to buy Tears of The Kingdom because of the inevitable successor coming fairly soon (2 years from the games release but oh well) I would love an Switch 2 edition so that I can finally play it.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity really needs it imo, I have more issues with that game than just the performance and resolution but if they improve those then it would be a lot more enjoyable for me
But for the game I want to see enhanced on Switch 2 is Kirby and the Forgotten Land, it already looks and runs really good on Switch but seeing it run at 60 FPS with enemies that move at more than 10 FPS in the background would be amazing

Astral Chain is a very good pick (I didn’t think of)! Higher res, 60 fps, and some fancy ray tracing effects. Would be great!

Bayonetta 3. Literally all musou games (not just for the framerate but also to be on par with ps4’s on screen enemy count). Link’s Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom (if Switch 1 games won’t have an fps boost system like ps4 on ps5 and Xone on XSX).

Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece, it's a cloud version on Switch so it would be nice to have a native Switch 2 version. In general though, I think remastering Switch games for Switch 2 is a waste. Releasing games for Switch and Switch 2 at the same time (like the already announced Rhythm Heaven and Tomodachi Life) however is perfectly fine.

@ElkinFencer10 yeah I mean wolfenstein looks surprisingly good but blurry and anything with fast paced gunplay really need a stable frame rate or the aiming starts to feel off. Also the outer worlds isn’t to bad but the loading screens really take away from the experience cause they are long. Maybe they could fix hog legacy to fully be traversal without loading screens with the new hardware but idk.

I’ve already held off on Kirby Star Allies and Forgotten Land this gen, purely out of hope there would be some kind of Switch 2 or emulation solution for their framerate. Putting visuals before performance was such a disservice to that character and series.

I'm highly unlikely to pay to upgrade a Switch game, but likely I'd buy the Switch 2 edition of anything the comes out cross-gen.

Mario Maker 3 ... D?
Can't be that impossible to at least make the toolset for courses with rudimentary shapes like the more linear bowser worlds in 64 and the Fluddless levels in Sunshine

The obvious pick is Pokemon, but Game Freak just doesn’t know how to develop games that look good any more, so fps isn’t the only issue there, the games lately are just ugly.

For me I’m going BOTW/TOTK as the needs. Those are both incredible games with its only thing holding those titles back being performance, give them the platform and power they deserve.

For my want, Mario Make 2 was a stellar pick. Just the same reasons, I want mouse support, that’s it.

There are a few games I'm waiting to play on the off chance they run better on Switch 2. Most of them are third party, but Bayonetta 3, Xenoblade X, and Scarlet's DLC are all on that list.

Nintendo's pretty good at working within the limits of their hardware, so I can't think of any Switch exclusives that really need enough changes to require an entirely separate edition. The problem is I'm also not confident Nintendo will want to let any plain old Switch 1 games take advantage of the Switch 2's hardware. Based on the way they've done things before, it's possible they'll intentionally constrain the Switch 2 so that things run exactly the same as they did on its predecessor just for the sake of consistency.

We talk about games that need a Switch 2 Edition, or we could talk about games that don't need one, but will happen. I am looking at you Bethesda rereleasing Skyrim for the fourteenth time.

It’s not necessarily Nintendo games that need a switch 2 edition. Those are usually (almost) optimized (besides Pokémon).

It’s more western games that haven’t been build for Switch primarily, like the Witcher 3, Doom Eternal, Batman Arkham Knight, Mortal Kombat Ultimate and the like that could use an update.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership would be immediately better just from slightly quicker loading times. Similarly, Echoes of Wisdom being just so much more stable.
Curious if the TTYD remakester could pull off 60 FPS on Switch 2; I think the shiny graphics were worth the stable 30 FPS for me, but I know plenty of people weren't happy.

Personally, I feel that "Switch 2 Edition" is Nintendo's version of MS's "optimized for Series X|S".

Lets not have 'Switch 2' Editions of anything, give us the option to dl updated textures maybe and higher fps but just release new games and some much needed remakes of older console games.

@SearchingS I will die on this little hill of mine that I want Loftwings added to the TOTK expansion pass, with sky island stables that you build through side quests, managed by those poor benevolent little zonai constructs. You have to catch one by positioning yourself above them in the sky and divebombing down on top of them, just like what Groose did to Link!

This is all disappointing news to me. You see, I was hoping that all Switch games would get a boost from the new hardware. Reason being that hacked Switch’s whose clock speeds have been increased, usually see an improvement in frame rate. Not only that, but the new hardware is rumored to have upscaling tech, which can hopefully upscale sub 720p games to 1080p or higher.

Considering that most Switch games, docked, already increased their clock speeds for an increased resolution to 1080p compared to running the same game in handheld form, why couldn’t the Switch 2 do this for Switch games while in handheld form? Here is an example: FF XII and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 run at 540p in handheld but when docked run at 1080p; additionally, the frame rate might go up. Now imagine that the Switch 2 could have a mode in which handheld Switch 1 games are ran as if they were docked. Every Switch 1 handheld game would get a free upgrade in resolution and possibly frame rate. Of course this means increased demand on the handheld system, but new chip technology should be able to do what was once a hot and power hungry task as a cool and battery efficient task.

The truth that a hacked Switch (both docked and handheld) with increased clocks and the truth that docked Switches with the default increased clocks, both improve resolution and sometimes frame rate, proves that the Switch 2 only needs to increase clocks and use upscaleing and maybe frame generation to improve every single Switch 1 game for free without any special editions or downloads.

None - like I said before, if one finds a game's performance "abysmal" on Switch hardware, there's no amount of hardware upgrades that will change their mind, and the fan rants countless games face on the already beefier (if naturally less optimization-prone) Steam Deck and even PS5 only illustrate that point. Given mentality differences between Nintendo and Sony (hint: only one of them makes TVs for a living), I fail to share the commonplace assumption about the term at hand anyway.

I don’t think any game needs a paid upgrade. This isn’t like the Wii U where most people didn’t play these games.

Anything using Unity on switch 1 seems to run like crap. (Even HD Wii ports). Stuff seems to be getting worse over time not better when it comes to indie games. (I bought a load all 9/10 games from here and found 2/3 were what I consider not good enough technically to play). Now I tend to just get indies on series x.

Pokemon definitely needs to make a better version of Scarlet and Violet before attempting to make another big game. It runs horribly on Switch last time I checked, and if they can make some improvements with a Switch 2 edition or something, then maybe they can take what they learned and make something better for Switch 2.

Man, Totk runs so poorly in some parts that actually hurts my eyes. Great game but It could be by far a better experience with some simple upgrades like constant frame rate and constant resolution.

The possibility of the TTYD remake running at 60ps like the original on the Switch 2 is the only reason why I'm still waiting to get it. (If it's not the case, I'll get it anyway.)

These better be $10 upgrades and not you have to buy the game again for better frame rate and better resolution that is scummy if Nintendo does this when these Switch actually sold a ton unlike the Wii U

@ScalenePowers Yeah, Mario Maker 3 is a no brainer. I could have seen them doing Mario Maker Deluxe instead of MM2 when Switch launched, but that's not what we got so now it's iterative.

Why are people saying Smash Ultimate? It already runs at 60fps almost flawlessly. We need some of the games that chug to get upgraded. Not ones that already run well.

However, Switch 2 edition could refer to future cross-gen games that will be released in double editions for Switch 1 and 2, not necessarily upgrade patches for games already released.

I don't understand why anyone is assuming "Switch 2 Version" will include additional content. I feel it pretty obviously means "exact same game but with performance/visual improvements". Like when you buy certain Playstation games and get a PS4 version and a PS5 version.

I'd love to see a Switch 2 upgrade for Kirby's Dream Buffet that has 4 Player Local Play. But unfortunately I'd see them just making a new game instead of improving the original, if they even did either.

Many games would benefit from a 60fps update, a higher resolutions (4K even) and visual upgrades, but there's also the possiblity of them having new additions to the gameplay to guarantee a potential price point, like I don't know, increasing the limit of objects fusing on Tears of the Kingdom....
Basically small Deluxe-like improvements without asking for a $60 price point again. Personally I would love to see the most demanding Switch exclusive games gaining these improvements, especially Pokémon SV and Bayonetta 3, but the Xenoblade games could also benefit from them, especially in regards to resolution.

Oh boy, Metroid Prime 4 was shown recently on the direct but who knows if (and how) it could appear on the Switch 2 Direct, there's so much to guess!

Hoping for free upgrades and that most games run better by default. I know that's not like waving a magic wand, but hoping Nintendo devs planned for this eventuality. IDK about third party. Hoping any games coming out in 2025 will be optimized for SW2 out of the box if they need it: Lunar, Rune Factory Azuma, Trails in the Sky, Pokemon Z-A are high on my list.

Focus on the future. Games like Pokémon ZA and Metroid Prime 4 should get Switch2 dedicated versions so they can really take advantage of new hardware specs.

I've got around 45 physical Switch games and have kept them for a reason. Glitches, frame rate, low Res etc regardless, I've thoroughly enjoyed them.

All of the Bethesda, idsoft games. Doom and eternal.

@RupeeClock I think Xenoblade 2 was a bit rushed. Xenoblade X ran much better on the WiiU, albeit with some pop-in and the WiiU was a weaker system

Although if we’re talking non-Nintendo here, I’d say Minecraft needs a Switch 2 edition (based on what I heard from others say about its performance), either as a free upgrade available when the game is inserted onto a Switch 2, or a separate release that contains the Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions (the latter being the update) on a separate cartridge.

Probably an unpopular opinion but none of them. I’m tired of giving Nintendo money over and over again for the same games. The only one I would actually welcome with open arms at the moment isn’t even from Switch but Wii U which would be Wind Waker HD. I’d love to have a portable version and why we didn’t get it is beyond me. Nintendo ported everything under the sun from Wii U to Switch BUT that game it would seem.

Believe it or not, the Switch 2 enhanced game I want to see happen most is actually Sonic Frontiers. I'd love a good, portable version of that game that isn't on Steam Deck.

But Nintendo wise... Kirby and the Forgotten Land. 60fps and an graphical upscaling would be great.

yeah for me while it was star allies i found the most jarring due to previous kirby games in that style running at 60fps even on 3ds i found forgotten land the far more enjoyable game and while things like the dodge timing was super generous having more responsiveness and smoothness to a games gameplay is always nice alongside looking nicer.

Smash Ult here. Not cause performance issues primarily, but cause it just didn't have the modes or functional online play to make it as engaging.

Given Its reverse compatibility, I don't see why any of them need a switch 2.

I hope all games can at least get a basic performance boost on switch 2. But I'd love to see some of the systems prettier titles (Mario Wonder, TOTK, Pikmin 4) get some extra love. They already look great some better lighting would prefect it.

I don't know even know what an Edition means. It sounds like a Switch game with more content. So, Zelda BOTW could arrive with all the bonus content. Same with Smash Bros. Or, even Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

How about the new Mario Kart itself! Yes, the new MK could be on Switch and Switch 2, especially if Nintendo want to rake in dollars. Why ignore your existing 150 million customers? Not everyone will rush to Switch 2 in the first week.

As NL suggests, it could be just a straight copy of a Switch game with better visuals.

I'll ignore the last option as of least interest and importance, while any new Switch 2 game I would play there, not on the Switch.

To the first scenario, Smash Bros, along with even a few more characters, could be the one, especially as I never bought any of the extra characters on Switch. MK8 Deluxe might interest the few people that never bought a Switch or its MK8, or the extra courses.

I voted MK8 Deluxe as the "need" (mostly because I couldn't think of much else) and Smash Ultimate as the "want". Others suggesting Mario Maker 2 as a "need" is worthwhile, especially with the likely mouse controls and so the game stays alive for many more years. Much better than a MM3.

Also, this belief there could be so many Switch 2 editions is overblown. With Switch games playable on Switch 2, I see little need to make better looking versions. I firmly believe these Editions will be very limited in number and centred around extra content.

Maybe they can go a bit bigger like Hello Kitty Adventure Island with more of an island to explore, and a focus on building friendship - but at the same time to keep the core mechanics

I'm missing two other games in the list. Okay, it's not a Nintendo franchise. But at least the first one fits the Switch so well because it's co-op.

"It takes two" looks much worse on the Switch 1 than on any other system. But the Switch has the best co-op concept because it can also be played on mobile devices.

"Diablo 2 resurrected" is simply a classic that had to make too many compromises in the Switch port.

@littlegreenbob I've played two Animal Crossing games (the other being New Leaf), and I eventually burned out on both pretty rapidly, as there isn't really an awful lot to do once you just get into the daily grind, and then it just feels little more than a mobile clicker game.

While Violet and Scarlett have been shown to run better on better hardware (apparently via emulator), I thought I heard it was the coding that poorly optimized it is the root issue.

I'm playing Hogwarts Legacy right now after the big eshop sale and while it's an impressive port that runs quite well, it'd be nice to see the wrinkles ironed out to achieve parity with the other versions.

My assumption is these will be upgrades, but not be "S2 exclusive DLC included" things. Or at least I hope not!

None at all! I highly doubt Nintendo will rerelease these games since Switch 2's backwards compatible with Switch 1 games and Nintendo really are nothing like Sony or Microsoft that makes their games as fancy as they can in terms of performance and graphics. All I care is seeing how the AI upscaling can improve sub-1080p/720p games and how they fair up on a 4K TV and see how better each game reaches their frame rate target. Frame rate boosts are only cherries on top for me, but not needed since I really don't care about graphics or frame rates.

Honestly, this possibility of buying NS2 Edition versions of games, or buying DLC which converts your OG games into NS2 Edition ones, doesn’t excite me that much. On a sequel console with (supposedly, hopefully!) robust backwards compatibility, I’m mostly going to be content playing the games I already bought.

IF, and it’s a huge IF, Nintendo sells NS2 Ed games physically AND complete on cartridge, THAT is how I would be tempted to bite. I would want the base game with all its DLC, patches, and NS2 enhancements present on the physical cartridge - like Criterion Collection versions of games. In that scenario, I’d be happy to rebuy physical editions of Smash Ultimate, Odyssey, MK8, and some others.

I hope they have free performance enhancements when running Switch 1 games on Switch 2. I wouldn't pay for upgraded versions of any Switch games, but would enjoy dipping back into a number of them if they ran better.

My actual choice for the one I want most wasn't selectable in the 2nd poll, maybe because it was only published by Nintendo outside Japan. But I would choose Dragon Quest Builders 2. That was one of my fave Switch games and I'd love the excuse to play through it again. Performance dipped in some parts of the main game, but it dipped SUPER hard when visiting some of the extremely complex islands other players had built and shared in the online mode. I remember some that dipped to what felt like 2-4 FPS. I doubt they'll put out an intentional enhancement to that game after all this time, but if the Switch 2 were able to just passively boost the performance of Switch 1 games in situations like that, that'd be awesome.

Otherwise, I have more realistic hopes for ToTK running better when deploying complex builds. 😅 A similar situation, but seems a lot more likely for that game to get a performance enhancement if it requires intentional developer effort at all.

A more fully fledged version of Sonic Frontiers would be nice - with the pop-in problem fixed along the way
