The Switch 2's Screen Isn't OLED, But It Will Support 1080p/120fps Gameplay

Okay, 120fps is actually impressive, was not expecting that

I'm curious about the battery life.

Some LCDs look as good if not better. But we shall see. The butter smooth fps potential is welcome. Hope devs design games to achieve it

I know why it doesn't have OLED.

They will sell it again with OLED in 2 years.

VRR would be icing on the cake, but the specs are already very impressive.

EDIT: the official sites now mention support for VRR, although they don't state explicitly if it applies to the built-in display or the docked output. But, yes, the display is almost certainly VRR-capable. That might be one of the reasons for the high price.

Thumbsticks look bigger. That is more important to me. The Switch 1 joycons are horrible. Thumbsticks are far too small.

120Hz displays can also provide a clean 40 FPS experience. So definitely a good upgrade!

Hmm, from what I have seen and no RDR2 I am cool with Oled Switch for at least 2 years.

Now I'm interested in playing 3rd party games on switch (2) console again, I mostly playing indie games on playstation portal now since it's more comfortable (and has better speakers) but if switch 2 can do 120 fps on indie games maybe I'll play the games there.

Looking very good even if it’s not oled. I’m curious to see if switch 1 games will play in handheld but with docked mode settings on it.

It's like Nintendo was checking off the boxes on everyone's wishlist for this console

LCD shouldn't have been nearly as big of a downgrade as people feared. LCD tech should've grown over the years, and it sounds like Nintendo is delivering more than expected.

Now I just wonder about the battery life. THAT will be crucial for me.

Cool tech, but I'll wait & see what Sega is bringing to the party.

People will moan so much about no OLED. Honestly I never upgraded my old one, never had an OLED TV, so I won't miss it.

1. Battery Life
2. If battery life bad - wait for OLED model

There better be no more cloud versions next gen, because if Switch's insistent 720p didn't kill all hopes of portable streaming prior, a 1080p (I'm not even touching the 4K effery because it's docked only anyway) absolutely will. And I'm compelled to reiterate my lowkey concern for the potential filesizes as well.

Sigh, if this was a part of some secret agreement with a certain Japanese TV manufacturer for their former exclusives we've been getting, then I outright want Gravity Rush, both Horizons AND Spider-Man, with Folklore and Tokyo Jungle on top.😜🙄😏 Otherwise, the least exciting part of the entire Direct (and the most "informed attribute" of its trailers) in my book by far. It's one thing to spend a home console's power and development resources on this fluff, but a hybrid's?

It still looks pretty, and I have an LCD TV which looks rather nice. I've noticed how great Metro games look on OLED, so I'll miss that but it's to be expected.

The Switch 2 clearly has power. It's actually surpassed my expectations. A proper generational leap.

This was a big surprise. Steam Deck only got a 800p screen, so my bet were at 900p. The battery life may be a big problem here, since no secret that batter life of Steam Deck is poo poo.

It's a crazy upgrade from 720p to 1080p!

It does kind of feel like while with home consoles theres been some diminishing returns, with handheld consoles it does feel like the jump is a lot more noticable, i remember picking up the vita back in 2012 and found the jump in visuals from consoles like the psp impressed me more than the ps3>ps4 jump, then going on from vita to switch and it looks like going from switch 1 to switch 2 will have the same effect, as you mentioned it will feel like a LEAP in terms of visuals.

Does it have vrr ? more bothered about that than theoretical 120fps

Yeah expected no OLED which sucks. 100% expect them to sell the OLED model later down the line. People here gaslighting that there isn’t much difference between LCD and OLED clearly never played the original Switch/Lite then hopped into the OLED.

Difference was night and day + OLED has improved battery life efficiency. Really curious what the battery life for Switch 2 is.

I can totally ride with all these improvements with a LCD screen. Beautiful. ♥️ In any case, it'll be some time after the June 5th launch before I get one.

This is a huge jump for a Nintendo console. Nintendo is competing with power for the first time since the GameCube days.

@Switch_Pro yeah. I've never really been a massive fan Nintendo games outside of Zelda. Sega games intrigue me more.

Remember guys they said up to 120fps, that doesn't mean every game could achieve 120fps. Developers will have to sacrifice something to achieve 120fps and 120fps is not a native framerate for some games.

Who knows how much more it'll have costed had the screen been OLED. Leave that for the future!
Will it also be compatible with VRR though? That wasn't confirmed, but it was included on a recent leak which correctly predicted these new features. Maybe they thought it wouldn't be easily understood with the audience?

@AllBLK The Belgian site has a specs list, stating battery life is 2 hours to 6.5 hours, it's a lithiumionbattery of 5220 mAh

Sounds to me like it will be powerful enough to support Genshin Impact after all. Those specs do make it seem like it is just as powerful, if not more so, than the PS4, which can run the game just fine. So here's hoping HoYoverse will announce a Switch 2 port soon enough!

@MaseSco Somehow I doubt you've played all the amazing deep cuts Nintendo has published over the years. But even then, all the new Sega games should be playable on Switch 2 anyways, you ain't getting a new Sega console.

Sega is going to bring “blast processing” like they did in 1991. Sega does what Nintendont.

Disappointed there's no news on OLED, much prefer the Oled and in typical nintendo fashion they'll wait a while to drop it, but I'm patient and I'll wait for it, not a huge fan of LCD screens. Other than that specs looks good, and digging the upgrades and glad they're finally releasing gamecube games on switch online.

@Switch_Pro I've played most Nintendo games. Only one left is the Prime Trilogy.
I never even said I wanted a new Sega console, so not sure where you pulled that.

I'd buy this at launch if it were OLED but I'll have to wait like I did for the original until an OLED variation releases before I buy. It's 2025 and OLED / QLED should be standard.

@kmtrain83 If you experience blurriness try connecting your ps5 with lan cable rather than wifi, I heard it really improve the ps5 to portal connection, I'm usually using wifi but when I bought the portal I bought lan cable too.

Yeah I prefer the game to run on the machine too but it's hard for $200 portable to have ps5 power. I wish ps portal have direct connection to ps5 like the wii u tablet.

But, at least, if it supports 120 fps, then, judging by the original Switch, we can count on most games running at around 40-60 fps. :B

But will Switch 1 games play at 1080p in handheld now that the screen can support that??

Does anybody know if the switch 1 games are displayed in 1080p in handheld mode instead of 720p without upgrade? Should be possible because now they do in docked mode.

I don't care about the screen type. LCD is good enough for me. What do I care, though, is the battery life. Energy management is not good on the Switch: if I leave my old PS Vita in standby mode, and Switch too - the eleven-year-old Vita will drain its battery from full to empty in about five to seven days, whereas the Switch (mfr. 2022) will last around three to four days.
