I only have the 2DS, so no 3D screen. I was wondering if the 3D made playing Super Mario 3D Land any easier. And I would have liked to have seen Metroid: Samus Returns with 3D. I thought that would be cool. But . . . I never got around to getting a 3DS.

I played most of 3D land without 3D, but the 3D definitely gives you a sense of depth that you simply don’t get playing in 2D. For instance, I’m sure you’ve seen plenty of the gimmick rooms where it looks like you should be able to navigate a certain way, but you have to stand on a button to change the perspective so you can see how the room is actually laid out. In 3D, you can just tell that a platform is actually in the foreground/background without the perspective change.
Metroid: Samus Returns is a visual treat, I don’t remember a whole lot of the 3D aspects in detail, but the backgrounds were unlike any side scrolling Metroid prior. I need to replay that game. It’s actually the game that caused my original old 3DS’ circle pad to drift, from what I can only assume was the abuse it went through in the intense end game fights.
I also recall Majoras Mask 3D being a particularly good looking game with the 3D enabled. Federation Force is also up there for me, given that you have the helmet overlay. I love any game that gives you a cockpit or helmet overlay, it’s just soooo immersive, especially with the 3D!

I think I barely remember rooms like that. It's been about 5 maybe 6 years since I finished the regular levels. I haven't finished the additional levels.
I just thought that would be cool to see.
But also, I've been trying to get back into finishing Super Mario Odyssey. The level I'm getting back to you have to jump from lava puddle to lava puddle and I am having a heck of a time judging where Lava-Mario is in relationship to the lava puddles. I was just wondering if 3D would have made that easier. LOL.

LOL. Yeah. Metroid can be intense (or is that frustrating), LOL. I enjoyed MSR so much that I found it hard to put it down. I finished the game a lot sooner than I thought I would. I thought it was so well done. Amazing game play. Amazing character designs. Amazing backgrounds. I just wondered what it would like with with 3D cranked up.

I hadn't even thought about MM 3D. But, yeah, that would be cool.
You bringing up cockpit / helmet, its got me thinking about Galaga 3D Impact (on Pacman & Galaga Dimensions). I wonder what that would have looked like in 3D.
@NintendoDad yeah I like RPGs and I wanted to play one where the story is just there, so I can do fitness reps between the turns What about you?
Me personally . . . I haven't gotten the RPG bug yet.
I don't know whether its because I just don't have the patience or the memory to play RPGs. LOL.
Lately I've been on a Metroid and Zelda crave. LOL.
I just finished OOT. And I enjoyed that so much that I started up MM 3D.
And Metroid Samus Returns . . . when I managed to get a copy of that game, I couldn't put it down. I finished it way sooner than I thought I would. So I tracked down Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion and currently working through Zero Mission. So those 2 games are on my plate, along with Super Metroid (on NSO). I've not played Metroid Dread yet. But I'm wondering if I should just get Dread and finish that before the older games.
Yesterday, I was playing Codename Steam, which is has one of the most the most bizarre premises for a game ever, but yet somehow works quite well. It’s a very unique take on the tactical rpg, mixing some FPS principles too.
I’m thinking I want to put down my Steam Deck for a bit and play more of the 3DS. I pulled out my copy of Terraria so I could get around to playing it again (the best controlling version of Terraria in my opinion), and I might go back and play A Link Between Worlds again, even though I don’t really like the item renting mechanic.
How about yourself, what have you been playing recently?
I see that name "Code Name Steam" quite a bit. Is it available on Switch yet? If not, is it a game that should get ported?
I've never tried Terraria. I know my kids play that game on Steam. I've got ALBW and just started it. But I think it might be a background game that I just slowly hack away at.
For what I tried out this weekend, I dove back into Super Mario Odyssey, Yoshi's Wooly World, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Those 3 games my daughter and I got really close to finishing . . . and then we just stopped. She's playing a lot with her friends on-line. So I switched gears to concentrate on finishing OOT.
But I just wasn't in the mood for Odyssey, Yoshi or Kirby this weekend.
I ended up picking back up Metroid Zero Mission and kinda getting into it. It's bringing back the fun I had playing Metroid Samus Returns.
So I'm thinking I might focus on Zero Mission for a bit with MM in the background.

Not on Switch yet, but I think it’s deserving of a port. The art style (very comic book like, but in 3D) would lend itself to the Switch’s hardware, and the roster of characters is very interesting. In case you don’t know, then game features a lineup of American folk and literary characters, like John Henry (folk story), Queequeg (Moby Dick), Lion (Wizard of Oz), just to name a few, all of whom are agents working under President Lincoln (who survived assassination) to fight invading aliens in a steampunk setting. Quite a strange theme if you ask me! It’s especially interesting if you went through American literature in school, since you will be familiar with many of these characters and get some of the little jokes they slip in. It’s also voiced, which is rare from a first party 3DS game.
Also it features Fire Emblem characters as playable with the required Amiibo, because Steampunk Abe Lincoln Wizard of Oz characters fighting aliens wasn’t weird enough. Overall, yes this game deserves a second chance on Switch! (Or, if you can’t wait, find it at a second hand store, I got mine pretty cheap since it’s kinda a hidden gem)
Sounds like a lot of content. Sounds like a game to keep your eye open for.
If it were to be ported . . . I hope its ported to Switch and Switch 2. Actually . . . I hope a lot of games get both Switch and Switch 2 . . . so hybrid. With over 150 million Switch consoles sold, that would be a lot of gamers publishers would be walking away from in the short term.
I restarted Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate the other day and it's such a blast from the past since I played the og Wii version so much. I tried playing it on my original model 3DS a few months ago, and it was nigh unplayable for me on the tiny screens, especially coming off of MHRise on Switch.
That Hori grip gives a full controller feeling, bigger shoulder buttons, and still provides access to every single port.
I also restarted SMTIV and wow that's such a good game. It might be my favorite story and setting of any game, ever.
It's amazing what the 3DS library has to offer. So many amazing games. And there's something special about playing these games on a little handheld like the 3DS.

But on my n3DSXL I got last month, and with the Hori Monster Hunter Grip... It's a great experience: https://imgur.com/a/monster-hunter-x-n3ssxl-grip-by-hori-YeT2uq6 (Edit: I don't know how to post images on here haha)

I know someone that upgraded their OG 3DS to a New 3DS to play a Monster Hunter game. They used to meet up with friends to hunt together.
I had to look up the Hori Grip. That thing looks good. Looks super comfy!

+1
Yes. The 3DS library is pretty good.
I was late to the party getting my 2DS. I actually got the 2DS after we got our Switch. So a lot of this is still relatively new to me.

I picked up a 3DS maybe a year after it launched, but I never really got into it at the time. I grabbed a few of the big games (Mario 3D Land, Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakening) but I didn’t sink much time into any of them. I was getting ready for college, and gaming just kind of dropped off for me. I'd mess around with it here and there, but it wasn’t like other consoles I grew up with where I'd spend hours glued to the screen. I didn't even bother getting a Switch for until a couple years after it launched, and when I finally did, it was mostly just for local multiplayer until 2020 when everyone was stuck inside.
Lately though, I've had much more free time, and I've ended up rediscovering the 3DS. A lot of the library is basically brand new to me, and it feels like there's this whole world of games I never gave a proper shot.
There’s also just something really nice about playing older games. I've got a huge backlog on the Switch too, and I still grab all the big releases, but trying to keep up with every shiny new title just gets exhausting. Most of the time, I just default to replaying Breath of the Wild when I pick my Switch up.
The 3DS, on the other hand, is set in stone. The library’s locked in, so I don’t feel any pressure to stay current. There’s no new game dropping next week that's going to pull my attention away. I can just take my time, go back through old stuff, and actually enjoy it.
Not sure if this experience resonates with anyone else - maybe it's a me thing. But I'm just really happy with what the 3DS offers me at this point in my life (and even more so on the n3DSXL with its larger screens and size that fits better in my hands).

Yeah. We didn't rush out to get a Switch when it came out. As a Wii U owner, I wanted to wait to see if the Switch was going to sell more units than the Wii U. LOL. We got ours the 2nd Xmas. Just in time to have one during COVID. And it was nice having it during the lockdown. My family and I played a lot of Switch back then.

Yeah. I never played these classics, like Zelda or Metroid back in the day. I just didn't know that much about them. But having just played OOT on my 2DS, I'm glad I took the time to try it out. The world building in that game is just so well done. I may not be good at gaming. But I do enjoy getting to explore these amazing games. Metroid Samus Returns is another amazing game I finished off on my 2DS.

For me, I wish I had gotten a 3DS back when I was picking up my 2DS because it would fold up smaller and fit in my pocket better. As it stands . . . when I want a pocketable console I have to settle for our DS Lite.
But . . . the games on the 2DS have been awesome. I picked up OOT 3D and MM 3D (at that time it was the only way to play those games on-the-go, because they weren't available on NSO yet.) And . . . I'm thinking that being able to play OOT handheld was partly how I got it finished. I don't always feel like sitting down in front of a TV. And sometimes I'd take our 2DS when I'd visit my dad, so I'd squeeze in a little gaming before I went to sleep. So 15 minutes here, and an hour there, . . . eventually I got it done. So for it being easily portable with great games, I've really enjoyed our 2DS.
Multiple 3DS’s of mine are now requiring repairs and new batteries. So just been ordering replacement parts and performing some 3DS surgery. Pretty much expected as theses consoles have been in regular use and travel since they were new. I do hope I can keep them going for the next 15 years or so.
@NinChocolate My 2ds is good for another 10 years tops. but I wanna make sure I keep the battery in mind. Surprisingly my DS FAT is going on strong. But I'm planing on getting a new battery for it too. but for now...it's alright.
I sell my famous Chesapeake Tupperware.
I ACCEPT NO DEBIT CARDS!
DO YOU HEAR ME!?!
Fingers crossed on your 2DS and DS FAT. I hope everything goes ok with its battery.
I am having issues with 2 of our DS Lites.
We have one 2DS and three DS Lites.
2DS is working fine — knock on wood.
One of our DS Lites is working well as well — again, knock on wood.
Another DS Lite we have works, but the charge doesn't last long. I've changed the battery (both with an aftermarket and the battery for the DS Lite that works well) and even after giving it a good amount of time to charge up, it still doesn't have that long a play time. Maybe 1-1/2 hours? Where as our good DS Lite has 3 to 5 hours. 'not sure what is happening. So I pack a battery pack with that one to extend game time while out and about.
Does anyone know what might be wrong? Bad charging circuit? Higher than normal drain?
And our last DS Lite also does not have a long game time. And the left shoulder button does not work.
I'm just happy that our 2DS is still working. (Knock on wood.) I just took it out yesterday. I had to be somewhere to open the door for someone to conduct a quick inspection. But I was going to be stuck there for a few hours. I did some clean up while I was there. But eventually ran out of stuff I could do so I treated myself to a bit of MM and Galaga.
I had that craving not long ago lol. I finished like 6 or 7 Zeldas. After a couple of years I finished Metorid Dread (fantastic game) and Super Metroid (great, too - how do you like it?)
as for 3ds MMF is pretty much it, but I am currently in a FF7 playthrough, thinking about starting something new.
Funny, I just read this page and you are playing The Legend of Zelda entries. Well, I started The Legend of Zelda days ago, for the first time and without a map. The first dungeon I found was Level 6, I could not beat it and I read that it's one of the most difficult if you are not prepared. The enemies just crush you with three hearts. Then I found Level 3, which I beat, but realised that the game was bundled with a map, so I'm going to beat the game looking online, at least for the dungeon order. I had this on Gamecube, but never tried it.
