
Back in the mid to late ‘90s when the fifth generation of consoles was still going strong, mascot platformers were all the rage. Hoping to take advantage of the then-growing trend, Argonaut Software—best known for its work on Star Fox and the Super FX chip for the SNES—made a pitch to Nintendo for a new 3D platformer starring Yoshi.
Nintendo shot them down, but Argonaut wasn’t ready to give up on the concept, so the team retooled it into an original game called Croc: Legend of the Gobbos that saw release on other platforms. Now, the studio has decided to bring Croc back for new audiences with a fresh remaster, and while this release is certainly showing its age, it’s still an enjoyable romp.
Croc takes a level-based approach to its gameplay, guiding you through themed worlds packed with obstacles to overcome and collectibles to ferret out.

The goal of each level is simply to make it to the end and give a gong a good swat with your tail spin attack, but there are also six of the titular gobbos hidden throughout each stage, as well as five coloured gems that unlock access to a sixth gobbo. Collecting them all is technically optional, but the only way you’ll get to challenge the final boss and see the true ending is if you manage to grab them all.
Level designs are relatively linear and lack the size seen in contemporaries like Super Mario 64 and Spyro the Dragon, but there are still plenty of secrets and rabbit trails to distract you from the main path. That said, it can sometimes feel like obstacles are haphazardly placed and the levels tend to be somewhat meandering—Croc is still an enjoyable platformer, but the levels don’t ‘flow’ nearly as well as some genre peers.
Then there’s the matter of stages tending to get too homogenous over time, especially when you’re going through a succession of levels in the same world. There are only so many times you can beat up the same foes and interact with the same obstacles before you start to recognise how few new ideas Croc has to bring to the table; this is the kind of game that’s more content to simply remix the same basic elements than to introduce novel gameplay concepts over time. This isn’t strictly a bad thing, but it does mean that Croc tends to run out of steam faster than you’d hope.

Still, there’s something charmingly simple about Croc’s approach to 3D platforming which makes it feel worthwhile. Each stage only lasts a few minutes, lending a brisk pace to the overall gameplay, and the straightforward approach to Croc’s moveset keeps the moment to moment action from feeling too complicated, unlike the infamous case of Donkey Kong 64. It won’t stick out in your memory for very long due to its general lack of creativity and spectacle, but the solid underlying mechanics make it feel worthwhile.
This being a modernised remaster, the visuals have naturally received a significant boost in fidelity that improves the moment-to-moment gameplay considerably. By default, the world has all the updated models and textures on display, but with the tap of a button, you can also toggle the retro models if you want a more old-school look. This can be further enhanced by activating filters that simulate a CRT screen. Regardless of your visual choice, everything runs at a buttery smooth 60fps.
The gameplay enhancements don’t stop there, as Croc now also features full analogue control to bring things more in line with expected platforming standards. Though the original game did have Dualshock support added late in development, it was ultimately designed around D-pad input, and thus went with a very hokey tank-like control approach in which you couldn’t both move forward and change direction at the same time.

If you’re particularly fond of that approach, this remaster still allows you to use the old D-pad controls, but the analogue option feels much more natural. The only drawback here, and this is a bit of a nitpick, is that the game not being designed around this can make some sections a lot easier than they were intended.
Wrapping up the additions for this remaster is a robust museum section that offers a comprehensive look at various marketing materials, concept art, and other resources from the time of the game’s original release. Croc was originally planned to be a more expansive multimedia franchise, and while this ultimately never quite panned out, it can be really interesting reading through things like the series bible or scripts for the cartoon that was being considered.
There are also numerous interviews to watch with key development staff, as they reflect on the design and development process. We were quite pleased by the museum content on display here; it doesn’t have any direct involvement with the gameplay, but it gives a lot of great insight into the development process and stands as a meaningful contribution to the ongoing struggle of video game preservation.
Conclusion
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos wasn’t exactly a revolutionary entry in the 3D platforming genre even back when it released, and though it still doesn’t necessarily ‘wow’ us today, it certainly is an entertaining and worthwhile adventure. Things like the new controls, enhanced presentation, and extensive museum content are satisfying additions, and the core adventure itself is still good retro 3D platforming fun, warts and all. We’d give this a strong recommendation to any fans who have fond memories of playing this on a CRT back in the day, and even if this would be your first time playing it, we’d still suggest you give it a shot if you’ve been through the best 3D platformers the Switch has to offer and still want more. Croc is a solid, if unspectacular retro adventure, and stands as a worthwhile addition to the Switch library.

I have ever played Croc on PS1 when I was teen long time ago.
I saw from YouTube, both Switch and PS5 version was running on 60 fps, but Switch version has a little bit fps drop on crowded area.
Definitely will get the Remastered version, but of course... the PS5 version to make it similar experience when I was teen.
It was from PS1, it will return on PS5.

I'm not as familiar with this game as others. Other than "knowing" the name of the game and that it was apparently a fun 3D platformer.
It sounds like a polished remaster actually and one for 3D platforming fans as well as those who want to relive nostalgia. The mechanics working nicely is the key for me.
However, I have a metric tonne on my backlog so this will likely be a discounted purchase.

Been really looking forward to picking this game up and experiencing a piece of 3D platforming history... Granted, that's also how I felt about Glover. I beat the first world of Glover and the first level in the Circus world, and I've gotta say--no, sir, I don't like it. I've heard that apparently the Glover port just isn't great, so maybe I'd like it better on original hardware, I dunno. The control scheme just feels very clunky; why is it inverted when I jump on top of the ball? I feel the same way about Tomb Raider, I find it clunky even with the remake's "modern" controls. Hopefully Croc updates the tank controls better than Lara Croft did.
I've never played Croc, but I know in the PS1 days these mid-tier kind of games often ended up being my favorites. Not sure how I'd feel about a game like this in the present day, but I'll likely pick this up at some point.
Really from what ive seen the only flaw with the remaster is that it uses the PC/saturn soundtrack which was missing quite a few music tracks.
though given how much care and love the devs have put into the package as a whole it wouldn't surprise me if they did end up adding the music down the line.
other than that its great to hear the remaster turned out well and am looking forward to replaying the game (replayed it a few years back on psone and still enjoyed it)
Loved this game as a kid. Definitely want to buy this if only for nostalgia’s sake but £25 for the download is mental to be honest. Will get it when it’s sub £15 in a few months!
@larryisaman I came here to write literally the same thing. We’re looking at $43 CAD in the north. Even with all the enhancements and TLC, that still seems bonkers.

i do remember finding the tank controls in croc easier to get used to than tomb raider since tomb raider kind of felt like a 3d equivalent of those "cinematic" platformers like Flashback where jumping was done in a very specific way, croc feels more like a regular 3d platformer with tank controls and as tank controls go i found them some of the easier ones to use with things like being able to quick-turn and whatnot.
i am curious to see how the modern controls feel since i remember it feeling like there were points in a level where tank controls felt surprisingly natural such as lining up some of the more tricky jumps, it felt more like the levels were built around the controls compared to something like Rascal (another psone platformer with tank controls) where iirc the tank controls were put in the game later as per request of the publisher or something like that while the levels and gameplay was designed without them.
i was kinda surprised by the hype for this because Croc games are not games that hold up particular well. they were good with the advent of 3D platformers, but they are not great games by anymeans. Spyro, Ape Escape and Crash games hold up way better. still good to see it revamped tho
@larryisaman They had it listed on the eShop at around £31 before launch so I wonder what happened for them to reduce the price?
@Smithicus the hype comes from the nostalgia for sure, but in my opinion Croc holds up very well. I've played it through multiple times since my childhood and it's always been fun. The first Croc is more simplistic than Mario or Spyro for sure, but it's still enjoyable. I consider it more like an arcade platformer, closer to Super Mario 3D World style than Super Mario 64 if you know what I'm saying. More sandbox-y. I don't get it why some people claim that Croc 2 doesn't hold well though - it's much more versatile than the first. Not as "rich" as Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie, sure, but still delicious, charming and fun.
@Smithicus almost certainly Nostalgia for the first. I had 1 & 2 as a kid but they were bottom of the barrel compared to the 1st party Nintendo and Sony 3D platformers.
I think Croc 1 benefitted from releasing in 1997 with little competition (Mario 64 & Crash were 1996. Banjo, Spyro, Sonic Adventure and Crash 2 were 1998) and buoyed by Final Fantasy 7 massively boosting the PS1.
Croc 2s sales fell off a cliff in 1999 whic shows how lucky the first game got with its release date.
Its now 13:23 UK time, and STILL I cannot buy this! You cant even add it to a wish list now. What is going on!
All I'm reading is that they didn't mess it up and I get to play Croc again with out all the usual extra steps of the getting the Saturn out or emulation hoops.
Sounds good and yeah it wasn't exactly up there with the greats of the genre back then but it has a charm that I think will carry me through a playthrough or two at least of this version.

Never owned the first one, only played it like once at my friends place. Still have the copy of Croc 2 on PS1. I liked that one less than any Spyro or Crash on the platform but it was still an interesting game to play trough with my brothers. Maybe they'll remaster that one too, or heck, make Croc 3. That was the game I was actually waiting for back in the day because kid me thought that every game in existence will surely get more sequels.

Man $30 is too much for a game like this, was hoping for it to be at least around $15.
I played it a bit on my Cousins House back then on PC.
Last Year i played the PSX Version on the Mister (16:9 Hack works nicely), so i have a good Comparison.
The Gog Version runs and plays nicely, sometimes i feel the Camera is too narrow, but overall there is not much to complain.
This is clearly a 7/10 Game and I don't mean that in a bad Way.
I played this Week here and there some Levels before and after Work, the short Levels, that are clearly far from a Mario 64, invite you to just have some fun.
The first World is quite easy, the second starts to get tight and the secret Entries will have some Section, that will make your Hands sweaty.
The Simplicity of the Game is a Benefit in my Eyes.
Many Plattformers nowadays tend to go the Donkey Kong 64 Road or else and have too much going on.
I started Yooka Laylee a couple of Times and there is just too much to collect, to buy and all the Talking...
Another one that hits the Simplicity right is Froggun.
Also, for younger Kids this could be a 8/10.
Such as Super Mario Bros on the NES, keeping it straight and simple is good to not overwhelm a Kid.
The remastered Graphics are nice, i personally like the smoothed Retro Mode, the standard roundiness is too round for my Taste, the Edges give the Croc more Character.
The Bonus Content is nice to see, the Game Design Notes are very interesting and if you have the PC Version, the Soundtrack can be taken out the Folder, it is just there
If you don't care about the Videos, i guess you could also delete the Video Files and save 20 GBs
I am thinking about to make a 720p and/or 1080p Mod for this, as converting the Video Files is no Sorcery.
Overall, the Game is simple, but plays nice, looks nice and i want to play further, so it is worth the 30 €
And hey, get it DRM free on Gog, if you see what Nintendo does on the Switch 2, go and support Customer friendly Stores.
